Discontinued does not mean there were none left in the retail channel to sale. Just no more being produced by Sony. Once those are sold... its gone.

They stopped selling ps2's in Japan and everyone thought that it was discontinued worldwide.

There has never been official confirmation that it WAS discontinued.

If it stops showing up with PS3 in Sony's Quarterly reports, then Ill believe it. Until then, nope.
