Forums - Gaming - Why I switched from PlayStation to Nintendo

I actually wanted to touch on the DS a bit. Got one for my girlfriend a while back, followed by a 3DS last Christmas. That little console has A LOT of stuff on it, good games and rubbish ones. She basically fell in love with the Phoenix Wright series and I can't blame her. From what I've seen it's a great game, with a lot of great ideas in it. Why not get MORE games like that on the large console? With proper exposure, proper marketing, a real push. I'm not someone that follows gaming news obsessively, but I'm not ignorant either. That being said, I never heard of Another Code or Endless Ocean until now...actually I lie, Endless Ocean now seems familiar from a while back. But Nintendo does not seem to care to market those games. Always Mario and Zelda...it's a bit tiring. I didn't say that there is a complete lack of innovation from them. Mario Galaxy is a good example...but it begs the question of "Why wasn't this a NEW franchise?" instead of just having the Mario name stapled to it. Was Nintendo afraid it would bomb if it would not have been named Mario? Again, little faith in my opinion. There are many companies afraid of creating new IPs this gen - Activision for one, whom got too scared of dropping the Call of Duty name from Modern Warfare -, but I think Nintendo are the guiltiest of all. As an exercise, I ask: would Okami have been better or worse if it would have been named Zelda: Legend of the Wolf Goddess? There are, of course, ups and downs to the strategy that Nintendo uses. May be for the better like this, may not be. But I for one would love to see a new platformer fully acknowledged and supported by Nintendo, that does not bear an old name. Heck, I'd hate for the characters of The Wheel of time, Lankhmar, Malazan: Book of the fallen and A song of ice and fire to be all Aragorns, Frodos and Legolases. May just be me though. Edit: My line breaks seem to be gone. Too tired to fix it now. Sorry for the clutter.

No worries. To me it seems like you dislike Nintendo's marketing and branding rather than their innovation. Because to be honest Galaxy was a whole new experience altogether. I honestly don't think they slapped Mario onto the game because it does hold true to its roots still, and it was made by the Mario team and took inspiration from the series in general, but it is absolutely a new experience. I don't think that needed to change. Imho they need a better balance. Keep Mario and all that, and then market their new IPs better. I agree with you on that, that Nintendo isn't willing to take that risk in the core market at least.

As for Pheonix Wright on the home console, well a few games have crossed between the DS and Wii, a few examples are Trauma Center and Wario Ware. But I agree that more could be done. The problem with that is it's in the hands of 3rd parties as that point (Pheonix Wright is made by Capcom and Trauma Center by Atlus).

But as for seeing new faces, I know exactly what you mean and I agree. I just believe there's a balance to the answer to the problem, and there's a way to phrase the issue (since Mario and Zelda still largely innovate in their own way, without being new IPs). It makes the person criticising sound more in touch with the actual issue, and gets rid of Nintendo fans going "What are you talkin' about?" ;)

Why do people like me and Aldro rave about Uncharted? Only because it looks nice?

Yes, most of the time all I see from Aldro is like Uncharted looks amazing if nothing else! Not that it doesn't, but the graphics aspect is definitely above the gameplay with that one, presentation is what made Uncharted a strong series, gameplay, not so much.

Aldro and his gif porn is a bad example maybe, but speaking personally:

Great stories, great characters, great actors/actresses and great pacing (aside from in UC3), is what makes the series amazing. The visuals compliment that, not the other way around. Is the gameplay incredibly deep and complex? No, but it's no where near as simple and effortless as some make it out to be. It works, it's solid, tight and enjoyable. Even genuinely challenging on harder difficulties. And even if all I'm essentially doing in it is climbing shit and shooting, what does it matter if I'm still enjoying the fuck out of it throughout the full 8-10 hours?

I have to questions/opinions I want to throw at you because you're obviously a fan and although I doubt I'll reply to you I'm still curious to see your response;

Uncharted has great stories? No, they're as deep as a Mario game. You're confusing a great story with great storytelling. In every Uncharted game the story is that you're seeking a magical artefact/treasure but a bad guy/woman wants it for ultimate power so now there's a quest to reach it before they do. Finished. It doesn't help that there's no story arch across the series since they're all self contained 'stories'. And the characters are likeable but they're incredibly shallow, UC3 is the only game in the series that tried to make Drake a more interesting character especially in the young Drake section but the game just left unanswered questions and added no depth at all, he's just a generic good looking funny guy who's poorly written (e.g. In the museum in Turkey he was opposed to killing the guards then after a few minutes he was perfectly fine with throwing them off rooftops in the sea full of sharp rocks that would kill him in an unimaginably painful way?).

I'll tell you what Uncharted does well. It's cinematography, voice acting + well written dialogue, set-pieces and most importantly to its fans, great graphics. The weak story, solid but unremarkably gameplay, shallow characters, unimaginative art-style and predictability of the series is what stops them being great games and merely decent (UC1 & 3 or good UC2). I'd bet that if Uncharted was started on the PS2 and was exactly the same in every way except for the great visuals then it would have a lot less fans and praise from critics because it clearly lacks in the gameplay and story departments.

For people who wonder why I don't particulary like the Uncharted series, now you know why and you'll see that I don't think they're all that bad. I'm always fair and want to love everything I play but unfortunately not possible.

As for you RolStoppable, I'd bet that if you did buy a PS3 you'd enjoy at least a dozen games (enough to justify buying a console in my opinion). A lot of Sony's games put spectacle over substance, but there's literally something for everyone and you'd most likely find at least a few exclusives you like. Then there's all the third party games you could check out, maybe it would be worth it for you to buy a PS3 in a couple of years when the console + games are very cheap and just try out all the games that interest you, perhaps you'll enjoy enough games to justify purchasing future Playstation consoles to enjoy future iterations of those franchises. Or you could just stick with Nintendo and save yourself money, at the end of the day only your opinion and preference matters to you but if you have the money and love gaming I don't see why you can't own multiple consoles.

I used to love Sony PS1 and PS2 were great but after those two I've been with Xbox primarily since 2008

I'm sorry, but you are trying to say Metroid had more "ambiance" (I think you mean aesthetics ) than Killzone? Well, I don't know what to say to that...

By ambiance I mean the way the game is made you feel either tense or adventurous, depending on how the sound effects are made, what kind of music is played, the way the visuals are displayed, whether there are things hiding in the shadows, secret passages, those kinds of things. Metroid is all about that, especially Super Metroid, but Metroid Prime did that pretty well too.

That is the esthetics, and how does Metroid trump that of Shadow of the Colussus, which is universally agreed to be the best game ever made for showing how esthetics can tell the story rather than words.

Metroid was there first.

Hahaha, what story exactly? And which one? To even try to argue against Team ico shows you haven't played SotC or Ico and don't know what you're on about.

I used to love Sony for the Ps1 and Ps2 games sometimes even more than Nintendo tbh, they were just amazing and so many of them but then came the PS3 only to bite me in the balls after wasting 600 bucks on that damn console with it's "graphics is everything" motto, totally not worth it.

But graphics are pivtol to having better games. Just look at the perfect demo at PS4 conference from the guys who made Heavy Rain. Look at what Epic say time and time again. Better power and graphics will lead to better games.

WTF. Haha I hope you aren't being serious because what you said is ridiculous

I used to be a big PlayStation fan back in the PS1 days and the Spyro games were my favorite. I felt right at home, but over time it became more and more apparent that Sony and I had to part ways. While I grew up to leave my teenager years behind me, Sony refused to do the same. For the handful of female members we have around here, let me point out the entire scope of a male teenager's brain:

1) Is she hot?
2) If yes, how hot is she?

This mindset doesn't only apply to how male teenagers perceive women, but everything else as well. While I began to look at the finer details of games, Sony was still stuck in a mentality where only superficial things really mattered. The advancement of technology became less important to me over time, because a mediocre game with pretty graphics would still be a mediocre game. I wanted my games to be great at their core, not full of distractions that covered up for an unpolished/unbalanced game. You might say that good gameplay and good graphics are not mutually exclusive and you would be right for saying this. That's why I switched to Nintendo who have the highest batting average when it comes to making games like that.

I still follow the news on Sony systems and games, but time and time again I end up being disappointed, because they are unwilling to change. The PS4 announcement wasn't an exception to this rule, but further confirmation. I hope that one day I can own a Sony system without regrets again, but until then I'll stick to Nintendo games.

That is very biased, you like Nintendo, good for you, but don´t use your man-hater-mind to justify your taste.

I am 31 years old, and like SONY, but not because of this "is she hot?" nonsense you talked about. It is because I like their games, PS3 has amazing games that are NOT SEXYSTS in no way shape of form, like Valkyria Chronicles, Siren, Journey, Walking Dead, Red Dead Rendemption and hundreds of others.

Your genre or sexual issues have no correlation with gaming and you should not try to impose them as reasons for liking or disliking any of the big three.

That said, I respect your option and am sure that Nintendo will entertaing you well enough.

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

ummm what?

This is one of your worst Rol. I am disappoint.

Exactly why it's the total opposite. If people calm their emotions and read thoroughly they would soon realise it's a fake thread, not only the op has obvious hints, but some posters have already typed the "it's a rol thread".

But, if you take a look and see all the people arguing, you then will see that it's been quite a successful rol's thread.

People need to step aside of their gaming preferences if they want to truly enjoy a rol thread.

It's amazing to see so many users, new and old, still getting rolled in this forum after so many years.

Kudos.

It's always nice to see a master of their craft at work.

Keep up the good work Rol
