When talking to those people I feel like I'm not talking about games, but about testosterone-reliever-movies. Nintendo is where I find my home, and I'll stay here until some of the other console manufacturers can give me true gaming experiences. |
Same here... all I every hear is, "did you see the graphics in that game?" or "this game looks super realistic" but never anything about how the game actually plays or the story involved.

If you're talking about Metroid Prime, metroid was always more about ambiance than storyline, but even with that, Metroid Prime brought in Chozo Lore. I suspect you never played Metroid Prime. He's right that comparison of Metroid vs Killzone was pretty bad. |
I'm sorry, but you are trying to say Metroid had more "ambiance" (I think you mean aesthetics ) than Killzone? Well, I don't know what to say to that...

The backdrops looked like shit on PC man, the resolution was too low, we were already rocking HD res at the end of the 90's and the game didn't hold up lol. 7 had the same problem. Think about it though, you can literally run through FF8 in hella easy mode if you keep your characters under 15, how is that not a fucked up game? The story also almost made no sense, 9 was just a much better game where everything made sense and the ending was actually awesome if you keep the hammer! |
I agree that 8 didn't make sense, and it's a fair argument but at least while you were playing it trying to piece it together it was really fun.
And I realize that 8 has its cracks as to working around its difficulty system, but for most gamers who just played FF games without trying to "cheat" so to speak, this didn't actually affect us. I was probs lvl 60~smt when I beat it. Of course I had fun with aura and whatnot. ;) (can't remember all of it, I think I had auto-haste actually).
About FF8 on PC, that was the version I played (by Eidos). Remember, not all of us had uber PCs back then. For me it was excellent, and I gamed on PC too. For example Riven was a competition to 8's visuals for me. But I wasn't big on 3D PC games (always preferred playing those with a controller). I only played FF8 on PC because I didn't own a PS and refused back then to play a FF game on a PS (baaack then).

By ambiance I mean the way the game is made you feel either tense or adventurous, depending on how the sound effects are made, what kind of music is played, the way the visuals are displayed, whether there are things hiding in the shadows, secret passages, those kinds of things. Metroid is all about that, especially Super Metroid, but Metroid Prime did that pretty well too.
You clearly haven't played Journey.
The reason the ps3 gets so much praise by sony fans is that it has several incredible games of almost every genre. Whether you care to admit it or not, graphics enhance the experience, but ultimately it's all about the entire package. I can't think of any emotional experience that several ps3 games do in any wii/3ds games.
I will never forget Nariko's struggle and emotional pain in Heavenly Sword.

So what WiiU games give you that substance right now? Also, are you saying you didn't enjoy the games you got on the PS3? Cause I remember you saying you're the kind of person who doesn't keep his past consoles and moves on from gen to gen anyways. |
I was playing along in a Rol thread.
| RolStoppable said: The advancement of technology became less important to me over time, because a mediocre game with pretty graphics would still be a mediocre game. I wanted my games to be great at their core, not full of distractions that covered up for an unpolished/unbalanced game. You might say that good gameplay and good graphics are not mutually exclusive and you would be right for saying this. That's why I switched to Nintendo who have the highest batting average when it comes to making games like that. |
Nintendo games are fantastic at their core, but they have had almost the same core for a very long time now. Sony has more of a high risk / high reward thing going on, simply because they cover a larger range of genres and franchises, and are not afraid to add to them. Nintendo seem very stuck, and I personally would like to see them throw their weight behind a new untested IP.
As for graphics, Sony are just giving the developers more tools to work with. A powerful console, touchpad, move control etc are just more options to give the developer more freedom, to get third parties on side. One of their strengths are the third party games, which is where Nintendo is doing very poorly. I mean if you look at Metacritic, 45 PS3 games have 90+, whereas 14 Wii games have 90+. Can you really base console choice solely on first party games when there is such a disparity? There are a lot of good games you would miss, so I would strongly recommend looking into getting a second console. I wouldn't say switch, but there is a lot to be said for a PS3 and Wii combination.

That is the esthetics, and how does Metroid trump that of Shadow of the Colussus, which is universally agreed to be the best game ever made for showing how esthetics can tell the story rather than words.

Metroid was there first.
