AMD to sell a version of the PS4 APU to PC builders

In further AMD news it has been revealed that the company will be making available a version of the chip powering the Sony PlayStation 4 to ordinary folk and PC builders. The chip will be the same AMD Jaguar APU minus some Sony technology and custom specifications.

John Taylor, head of marketing for AMD's Global Business Units, told The Inquirer that the APU will be available to consumers later this year. The chip made available to consumers will be the based on the same technology but sounds like it will be cut down in several ways. Talking about Sony’s PS4 reveal AMD’s Taylor said “Everything that Sony has shared in that single chip is AMD [intellectual property], but we have not built an APU quite like that for anyone else in the market. It is by far the most powerful APU we have built to date, it leverages [intellectual property] that you will find in our A-series APUs later this year, our new generation of APUs but none that will quite be to that level of sheer number of cores, sheer number of teraflops.”

When AMD launches its third generation of APUs later in the year and the Sony PS4 is available it will be interesting to compare what differences and enhancements the Sony technology and chip specification makes to games titles across systems. However I’m sure both systems will offer nice in-game hair.

Something you guys seem to miss here:

Bold 1 : AMD are also providing the processor for the next xbox, this statement suggests that microsoft will not be opting for a more powerful cpu to compete with the ps4

Bold 2 : More or less confirmation that features noted in AMD's processor roadmap slated for Q3/Q4 release will already be present in the PS4 processor.

It's weird how almost all of your posts get ignored...

This happens when the audience does not want to read what he writes. The parallel universum made of hope and belief is strong with many ppl.

I guess they're still holding on to the dream that Microsoft will turn around and 'blow sony out of the water' when they reveal their kinect-and-win8-trojan box 720.

Another point to make is that Sony have paid AMD to make a specific spec APU, if they also arranged a deal with AMD to allow them to sell the same design (sans unrequired Sony additions) for their PC sector as this report more or less seems to confirm, than one can easilly, and correctly assume that a part of this deal involves unit price for these APU's dropping significantly, helping to cut the overall final production costs of the new console.

Weird thing is though, most people on these forums are Sony folks...

And sadly your last note will largely go unnoticed :P I put it in my PS4 prediction thread explaining this is the deal that will let Sony sell the PS4 for $349. Not a single reply ^^ But I don't really care; if my latest thread stays burried the happier I am; I got so much shit I basically stopped replying :P It turns out you really need some sort of hard evidence to convince people xD

Whats the point lol they still wouldn't be able to play ps4 games, and wouldn't there be better ones on the market?

Point is, this will allow the PS4 to be sold cheaper, and this could either result in the PS4 being SOLD cheaper to cosumers or Sony not losing a fuck ton per sold console. Basically, good news for Sony
