you cant really say that though. if you compare the hardware from launch on this very site, you will see that ps3 sold just as much as the ps2 in the same time span, and still is.

the reason why ps2 gained a big enough gap between the xb and gc was because it was released a year earlier than both of them, and by the time they were released, sony's top games already started coming out.

i think the ps3 can do 100 million. i also think the wii can do close to 180 million at its current rate. or maybe even more. but thats only if its current momentum can be maintained.

Exactly. When the PS2 came out, it had no competition (I'm not going to even talk about the Dreamcast) When the Xbox and the Gamecube came out, the PS2 still had no competition because both consoles were just so far behind. And the situation with the PS3? Not so much. The Wii is winning in Japan. The 360 is leading in the US. It's got a good deal in Europe but the Wii still has it beat. By the end of this generation, the people who bought PS2's will mix up and buy different consoles : 360s, Wiis, PS3s, and with that, it'll be very hard for the PS3's to reach 100 million. Also Consoles sales for last generation never got close to 200 million in sales. Yet, your prediction has the PS3 and Wiis selling 280 million units alone. Why the huge growth?

People need to understand to sell 100 million you have to have a huge first year. As when you have a huge first year you get deep into the mainstream. What's another way to sell 100 million. Have a huge first year, but that first year, either there was no competition or the competition failed on their own.

Meaning 360 had the best chance of getting 100 million this generation, of course it had a sublime first year.

360 now has no chance now. PS3 has no chance. It had a sublime first year and wasn't even first in that year. Wii is the only one that has a chance, but it would be a rought route for Wii, jsut for the sake that the console isn't necessarily future proof.

Like the ps2? Didn't that console have a very ordinary first year on the market??

I don't know, is being released only in Japan for most of that time considered an "ordinary year"?

Well the ps3 was released late in Europe so it''s not that different. And besides my point was only to counter the fact that you don't have to have a spectacular first year in order to succeed. And like you said the ps2 was released at least 6 months earlier in Japan then in the other regions. And despite that it dominated its generation.

Highly dout that it will even come within 20 mil. of the PS2's sales.

Guitar Hero 3/ Smash Hits

IT will pass 100mil

Or you can hit up this link, showing the PS3 has pretty much identical sales of the PS2 within the same amount of time, so again, it is very likely that the PS3 will be able to hit 100million, the 360 on the other hand, not so likely since its really a America only console.

why the huge growth you say? well i have 2 main reasons:

1, more and more people own more than one console because of the exclusives that each can offer. people are doing their pswii60 combos or pswii, or wii60, and all that shit.

2, the wii has captured a whole new audience into the gaming scene. now you see elderly people and business people with wii's. people you didnt even think would own a console. this in turn increases the install base in the gaming market. im pretty sure that alot of the people who bought a wii werent ps2 users or even gc users last gen.

and like i said, ps3 sales are pretty much on par with ps2 sales when you align launches. now im not saying it will become fist or even second, but at it's current rate it can reach 100 million.

There is no chance that it will reach 100 million. It might even finish behind the 360. It will not get over 65 million in a best-case scenario. That would be the strongest finish a non-winning console has ever had. I don't understand why people are predicting such huge growth.

People are saying that the PS3 has a chance at 100 million because if you compare the PS3 and PS2 on the hardware from launch chart, they follow the same path.

The saturn and PS1 both followed the same path for more then a year, with the saturn ahead, but look how that ended.

you do realise that this is japan only data? and doesnt that contradict your arguement? if the ps came from behind, then you're basically saying that the ps3 can also come from behind by putting across this point.
