Forums - Sony - Will PS3 top 100 million?

PS3 will be lucky to get to 50 million. Lets be realistic here, the console is doing nothing in Japan. It sold 8k last week for God's sake! And it's not gonna make it past 6 million in Japan, and thats if it's lucky. Without Japanese sales, it would need to sell an average of 22 million in NA and Others (very liberally assuming 6 million sold in Japan). It's not a market leader, and support is dictated by consumer demand, not the desires of Sony, so it's not gonna last 10 years.

I just don't see how any one could possibly think that PS3 could reach 100 million when it is performing abysmally in Japan, okay in NA, and good (but not market leader great) in Others. .

Hmm it will sell 6 million for sure in Japan I will be surprised if it can't.

It still has huge games on the way that will increase sales.

100 million? The PS3? I'm surprised... THAT IT'S OVER 9000! WHAT 9000! THERE'S NO WAY IT COULD BE THAT HIGH!

Why did this thread make it past one reply?

Someone asked a simple question, to which the answer cannot possibly be anything other than no (unless Sony literally sacrificed the company in order to deliver a $200 price drop tomorrow. Though even then, Nintendo could easily match their price, and Microsoft could do it without losing nearly as much money, so I still don't think the PS3 would get past 80 million).

So, N-O spells NO!

What you said doesn't imply that PS3 won't sell like gangbusters.  Plus, a $199 PS3 is more bang for the buck than a $149 360 or a $99 Wii, period (Blu-Ray, $50/year for online play becomes more important as console prices drop, price of 360 add-ons start to appear even more ridiculous given that they are included in PS3, etc.)

PS3 will break 100 million.  It's just that the industry is growing so much, and so many more countries now have consumers with the cash to spend, that 100 million won't be as big a deal in 6 years as it was when PS2 topped 100 million.

The SNES, NES or N64 can´t then the PS3 of course no.

Edit: not be assumed that the PS4 come out in 10 years?

The PS4 will therefore not have significantly more support than the PS3 initially did. Maybe less (the greater probability IMO), maybe a bit more, but not drastically more.

P.S. I'm not denying that many of your points have merit. I may think you're overestimating their effect but you make good points. However, the other side of things must be considered.

I'll go ahead and agree with your new thesis, then, since we can't predict the future all that accurately.

Aside from the industry perhaps being larger in a few years' time, I don't know that PS4 will have significantly more dev support than PS3 did.  Though, if PS4 drops quite a while after the 720 drops, so that those machines are basically almost in "generations" of their own, it seems clear that 720 may get more launch support than 360 had, and PS4 will get more than PS3 had, because each may be seen as bringing in new eras without significant competition in the "next-next" gen space.

Does it? For Japan it has FFXIII. GT5 as well, but that's not as big as in EU or NA. Same for MGS4. They need more Japanese-centric games, but those ALWAYS go to the winner, who is quite obviously the Wii in Japan. I just cannot see a console that's pulling 8k a week in Japan suddenly picking up steam. It goes against historical data in Japan. Whereas a comeback seems to be possible elsewhere, it seems that in Japan, once the ball starts rolling for one, everyone else is fucked. One could argue the PSP did reverse it's fortunes, but it has far more games that appeal to the Japanese (a prominent example being Monster Hunter, which switched to Wii), as well portables being more dominant in relation to home consoles.

I believe that the PS3 has some possibilities to reach 70 million . No way 100

FF, GT are system sellers in Japan an there are more games that will push hardware sales.  And about PSP....So many Japan centric games?  The most are niche games over there except Monster Hunter.

YEs or nO?

i think 70-80million and 600-800million software

If Sony makes it live 7 years or more, it will be able to do it, but it's unlikely that it will reach PS2.

And  it will be able to surpass Wii only if Nintendo will be forced to make it live at least 1 year and 1/2 less than PS3 to release an HD Wii2, but if Wii remains so successful Nintendo will be able to afford new plants and keep on producing Wii for low end market also after Wii2's release, like Sony always does with its second to last generation consoles: if this will happen, PS3 won't ever reach Wii.
