The PS3 will break 40 Million units by 2013.
Can you leave that in you signature? =)) Because my is already filled with enough info.. =)

And you wouldn`t buy PS3 for 199$ to play such gorgeousness? =)) AND that is only 2nd year life PS3 games. What will be there in 2009-2012 do you know? =))
gow2 is AWESOME and came only in 2007 or only after 7 years since PS2 launch. FFXII was also awesome for many people, came only after 6 years.

Gran Turismo 3 - 1,06 mln. in 3 weeks with around 4 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Gran Turismo 4 - 1,16 mln. with 18 mln. PS2 on the launch.

Final Fantasy X - around 2 mln. with 5 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Final Fantasy X-2 - 2.4 mln. with 12 mln. PS2 on the launch.

 

1.8 mln. PS3 today(2008.01.17) in Japan. Now(2009.04.30) 3.16 mln. PS3 were sold in Japan.
PS3 will reach 4 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 25k.

PS3 may reach 5 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 50k.
PS2 2001 vs PS3 2008 sales numbers =) + New games released in Japan by 2009 that passed 100k so far

PS3 better than the PS2? True for core gamers like us you are right. However the casuals don't care about that. They are flocking to the Wii and have abandoned PS. Casuals are also less likely to drop down the $ for multiple systems so they won't be PSWii owners or even Wii60. They will stick with the Wii and when the next cycle starts again they will make their choice then.

That's one thing many people need to realize. PS and PS2 had tremendous success off of the backs of casuals embracing it as the mainstream console. Those were the casuals who would buy just Madden games and play GH at parties. Well the partiers are playing the Wii now with its massive library of casual party shovelware and the Madden fans seem to be playing primarily on the 360. They aren't going to be swayed to the PS3 because of KZ2 or WkS or FFXIII or DMC4 or any other game you love to throw at us Crazzy.  The fact that you love  throwing high res pics like that shows how out of touch you are.  The masses won't care about that.  To them SMG looks next gen amazing!  They probably haven't even seen a God of War game or MGS ever. They won't care that the Wii can only output at 480p. Heck i'd wager many of the casuals playing with the Wii right now aren't even using 480p because they still have the standard composite cables hooked up.

 It is not better in the one place it needs to be, library diversity, it lacks the casual appeal of the PS2, and the even greater appeal of the Wii

@azrm2k, Online, PSN games, HOME -> that will appeal to casuals, PS2 didn`t have that.
AND how MANY PS2 users will JUMP for the Wii JUST because of CONTROLS? HoW many Casuals will ABANDON their favourite PS2 SERIES(Tekken, socom, jak, ratchet and etc.) for Wii? 80-90% of PS2 userbase? DREAM ON.
Do you KNOW HOW BIG LBP SUCCESS will be? Do you REALLY KNOW?

why would home appeal too casuals? most casuals won't even know about home

As always, you don't understand what I'm saying ...

The videogame industry has certain sales patterns which show up time and time again, and if you want to make a reasonable prediction it is important that you take into consideration these patterns; if you don't it is a lot like going to bed one night and proclaiming that the sun will not rise tomorow.

Now there is nothing wrong with making optimistic predictions; for example, on an annualized basis the PS3 is selling at 7 Million units per year in 2008, and there is nothing wrong with predicting that sales will hit 10 Million this year. Where it starts to become foolish is when people predict an unprecidented boost in sales because of the release of games which the general gaming public has demonstrated no interest in time and time again.

 Not many casual games for the PS3 in the next few years, and many of those favorite series you are referring to haven't done so well on the PS3, people don't care much for them

So people are going to buy an expensive piece of hardware to play something which is less flexible or established as something they can already play for free?

 The PS2 had no casual appeal, you said so yourself.

I do agree that the library is still falling short for very big sales though. It is important in a console such as that.
