Forums - Gaming - If MS and Sony do go ahead with the no used game plan, will it blow up in their faces?

Its called adapting and I welcome this.

You buy a new game for full price if you really want it. It goes down to $40 in a few months. Over a year old you get it for $30 new. And so on.

Personally I think this will expose the ridiculous lack of willpower among gamers. On the plus side, this teaches them to know THE VALUE OF A DOLLAR, getting $5 credit on a $60 purchase when they trade it in.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Around the Network

I wonder how PC gamers feel. They have been out of the used game market for ages, yet PC gaming is still thriving. And I've never once been able to buy a used game for my Android phone or tablets...

If they block used games, they will still survive and thrive. People will still buy games. Some people might buy less, obviously.

Or as others have said, it could be more incentive to have better initial prices or sales going on. Instead of a game staying at $60 for 3 years, we may see it drop much more quickly. After all, the publishers will make much more on a new $30 purchase after 1 year than they would on a used $30 purchase after 1 year. Since used = 0 money for them...

The prices used game stores charge are an incredible rip-off to begin with. Why risk buying a used game for ~$5-10 less than full price when the game disc could be crap. Sure, most places offer guarantees and exchange policies, but that's a hassle and the time + trip to go to the stores keeps taking away from that paltry $5-10 savings. The people that only buy used games now, will simply wait for better deals to buy their games, or they will simply buy less games than they normally would. Either way, that has 0 affect on the publishers since a used game sale does not count for anything to them or the official sales figures.

The only thing I can understand is wanting to sell your games after you beat them, to get back some income to go towards new games. That is the only remaining valid argument against banning used games that I see.

Either way, no matter what happens, consoles will still be fine and people will still buy games. People claiming they will stop gaming is ridiculous. Let me know how many of your Android/iOS games/apps, PC games, etc that you guys have bought used or sold recently :)

I never understood why some trade things in. I have even called some of them fools. Because they trade in a system get a small amount for it only to buy another of the same system a few months down the road. They are loosing money over all. I keep all my games because I know I will want to replay them down the road, and it isn't worth the "credit" for having to get it at a higher price because 1) the credit you got doesn't compair to what you have to re-buy it for. Or you can find so you go and get scalped by ebay/amazon market for someone who bought multiple copies.

If you want something you save for it. Who cares if it a few weeks or months after it comes out, if you are getting it for the multiplayer you can probally get the multiplayer du-jour and get the same experience when you have money.

All they need to do is be more competitive with digital games.

By default these games have higher margins in the first place and by design they cannot be resold. This is why PC, Android, iOS, and so one thrive with no used market. They offer well-priced digital solutions.

Everyone wins.

If it happens then would it means games can be cheaper (due to developers receiving more money)? it thats the case then it might not be such a big deal, if however the price of games are still high (even if their shitty) it could really hurt the industry.

I dont want to be a stereotype but how old are you? I guess life hasnt drilled a precious lesson into you.

They will charge more. There will be no price reductions at all.

Actually look at the example. There used to be no used game market back on the 16-bit era. Do you know how much certain games cost? Sonic 3 for the megadrive/genesis cost about 80 euros/dollars. Do not be fooled, if they destroy the used market, besides trampling on your sovereign right of property ownership but they would also take advantage of it to spike up the price of the most popular games.

This is also, very illegal and will stirr up a pot in europe, thats for sure.

With that said, thankfully to do so would be a huge mistake and would pretty much ensure the loss of the console race if one company only does it, or a reduction of the market size by those of us that will refuse to play this illegal game. Add to that the fact that an always on console does not reach areas that dont have internet/fast internet (broadband) and its easy to conclude it would be suicide to do that. I'm pretty sure Microsoft wont openly support it, just like Sony doesnt. Whoever jumps first, be it a console manufacturer or a publisher will no doubt feel the wrath of consumers.

If this happens, chances are that Nintendo will get almost nothing from third party publishers.

Thats a tangent of a conclusion. Maybe it wont if consumers block the other systems and Wii U has a bigger installed base.
