The gap is actually more like 1M. Numbers haven't been corrected for 2012, yet. I'm guessing they are waiting for Q1 2014 shipments to make sure no one overshipped. Still, quite impressive considering Sony basically handed MS the ball at the start of the gen for 2 years or so, with a $200 price difference, weaker online structure, and lack of quality 3rd party support. Even with all that, MS couldn't hold onto that ball for the remainder of the gen. Just shows you Sony's wise decisions of late have paid off, as well as the strength of the PS brand. I do have to give MS kudos for keeping the lead for so long, though.

Also, it's hilarious to watch 360 guys try and downplay this. Back in 2008 and early 2009, when the gap was ~8M, most were bragging about how the gap would either stay the same or just continue to grow larger. Now that the PS3 is guaranteed to pass the 360 year, it will probably end the gen with a 8M+ lead, IT DOESN'T MATTER. Of course, I'm sure if MS had kept the lead, it would have meant everything in the world.

The PS3 would've overtaken it much sooner, but the 360S and Kinect rejuvenated the xbox sales. Kinect alone is responsible for extra 10-15m Xbox sales.

true Kinect and MS marketing department were important in reviving sales of 360, or else by now PS3 would have had lead by 2 mil. But I m sure come this March with the release of God of War: Ascension, PS3 will take the lead

Will the PS4 take 6 years to catch the WiiU?

I think it won't take long for the PS4 to catch up to the WiiU. The WiiU isn't a fad like the Wii was.

Does this change effect any of your predictions for when the gap will close?

Some people seem so desperate to see the PS3 out of last place, but a lot of the sales of PS3 systems have been by people who use them almost exclusively for Blu Ray moviesSo if the PS3 does in the end outsell the Xbox 360, what does it really matter?  Almost all multi-platform games have sold better on the 360 and Sony's own PS3 games of late have not sold well at all.  As for me, I really don't care how many systems and one of them sell, as long as they are able to continue making great games.

no it doesn't. we can't say for sure what % of PS3's sold were for the purpose of being BluRay movie players.

I think that looking at the attach rate says a lot.

nope. that could mean some just bought a lower volume of games. that doesn't really help your argument as i prove little of what % owns what beacuse of what.

The gap is too small to be significant now.

And 360 is the slowest selling console.

This, The 360 did well and pulled some nice tricks this gen,but it failed to kill the ps3 when it had the chance

I'm amazed that the 360 turned out as popular as it did, fully stealing half of the PS2 market from the PS3 while having such odious issues as paid online and the RRoD. And still selling huge numbers on a console released in 2005 no less.

I don't think MS is really playing to drive Sony from the market, as they've only ever trimmed the price to keep sales momentum, not really to undercut Sony. MS is probably conscious of anti-competitive behaviour, they are a convicted monopolist after all.

Really? it was the only console on the scene to show next gen, people didnt want to wait, and while they had a year + its not really suprising it was as popular as it was.

and secondly they have said actually said thats what they wanted to do, stop sony

Yes, to stop Sony having a monopoly in that space, not to drive them out of business.

a year late and a monsterous price tag for the first year atleast? its almost like a 2 year head start because nobody was gonna spend that much for a game system..not to mention,ps3 always had the higher price tag throughtout the entire generation(its not even $199 yet). theres no slowing this monster down,,, be nervous wii

I don't know a single PS3 owner who bought it as only a Blu-ray player.  They both sell on multi-media functionality and that's all bluray is.  Also PS3 has a good attach rate and it's advertising that keeps those exclusives from selling for the most part methinks.

2006 - We are in the lead! that's the only thing that matters, Xbox has killed PS3
2007 - We have Halo, PS3 has Haze and no games
2008 - Gears of war has the best graphics. MGS4 will release on 360 too and PS3 has no games
2009 - Uncharted 2 is released. graphics doesn't mean shit. Xbox is the leading console.
2010 - PS3 has some games but nothing excite me. Multiplat games look better on 360.
2011 - PS3 will never catch 360 sales.
2012 - Dont care abt world wide 360 is constantly outselling PS3 in US, that is the main market.
2013 - OMG it took 7 years to catch upto 360, damn that's a long time, just shows how strong is Xbox.

2014 - Leading doesnt mean anything its the software tie ratio that matters

Pretty much

Yay!!!

You're right, attach rate is the metric which dispels the glorified bluray player myth, which is plain trolling. Just like the myth that the 360 is all dudebros who play nothing but CoD/EAsports.
