Forums - Gaming - GDDR5 will be the new Cell

Here is the problem with 8gb of GDDR5 ram. From my understanding GDDR5 ram is not available in large amounts so this could cause a shortage for the PS4. That much ram will add a considerable cost to the console. If the PS4 cost double than its competition then it could be the PS3 vs the 360 all over again. Also the size of the memory chips is pretty small which means they will take up a lot of room on the motherboard. This could be a very big risk for Sony but if the system sells will probably be the deciding advantage.

I've seen it, but it was not cast in a good light. They meant it was like the Cell in the sense that it is being over hyped and its potential would never be realized since the full 8GB won't be utilized. So in essence, they were saying the jump from 4GB to 8GB was a waste. At least, that was how the 2 or 3 people I saw framed their argument.

Playstation = The Beast from the East

Sony + Nintendo = WIN! PS3 + PSV + PS4 + Wii U + 3DS

So, if it's 360 vs PS3 again, that means that the PS4 will outsell the NeXbox right out of the gate, since they are launching at the same time.

Cell is not the only thing that make ps3 expensive the blu ray also contribute to this when ps3 launched less expensive blu ray was about 200 dollars.

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

What I don't understand is that game developers are praising the jump to 8GB, so I don't understand how some people think they know more than a developer.  Yes, some people do know a lot about this stuff, but if developers are praising it then it must be a good thing.

THE CELL "made sense" because it was something new and different from the normal tech. This is just RAM, only "a lot" of it.

I honestly don't know why some PS fans are using this as the new cell. It's kinda stupid imo.

It's DDR5 system ram, which is unheard of today except in graphics cards. There's no motherboard today that uses DDR5 ram modules for system ram (yet), which is twice as fast as DDR3 ram, so ya, it IS a big deal. It's not just the amount of ram, its the speed!

EXACTLY!!! A multitude of game developers were overjoyed after Sony formerly announced the system's RAM would be doubled from 4GB to 8GB. So with that said, it stands to reason that increasing the RAM would be a GOOD thing. Crytec, Epic, Naughty dog and many other devs have expressed positive sentiments towards the move. So as you pointed out, I don't know why people presume to know better than the actual game developers. xD

Difference is that the DEVs will know how 2 use the ram............................................
