I think what Sony revealed on the 20th was unexpected by Lots of people including Microsoft, but I think there was a game plan behind it.....They announced it earlier than Microsoft expected, although sony played a fair amount of 3rd party footage (including bungie) and didn't show the console....this was part of their plan.

Bungie is massivly assosiated with Microsoft and they were probably expecting to show the same footage at the next Xbox announcment along with other trailers shown at the Sony conference.  This means now that Microsoft will wan't to make their annoucment much bigger than Sony's so they will have to fill in the gaps now and reveal/show more than they intended or even had, without showing repeats from Sony's announcement.

This will leave Microsoft even less to show at E3 this year, Where as you can guess Sony will have the following to announce new games

Naughty dog
Polyphony digital
Sqaure enix (said they would reveal more at E3)
qauntic dream
Blizzard
Evolution studios
Media molecule
Santa monica

Plus also the most "important reason" Sony will have more attention....Because people still wan't to see what the playstation 4 looks like...

Ehh...mixed but I sincerely hold to the opinion that they should have at least shown the console, it gives a physical representation of what they will be delivering.

Whether or not Sony played a good hand will only be revealed after Microsoft does their thing. Could go either way.

they they showed a bare minimum but awe inspiring for what it was.

this basically hands them all the attention and puts pressure on ms to deliver. E3 is where the knockout punch connects.

If they show great 3rd party support at E3 and give the system a very affordable price then yes, they just played a very good hand.

by the fact we are talking about it is very good for sony. That was there plan.

The reveal is not a public revel (like they will do in E3)... it's more to catch the impress and the developers.

Sony just sent this message for devs "We created a machine like you wanted... show me now the what you can do with it".

Sony just fixed the ties with all the third-party devs.

No mistake made until today... well played.

I still think the reason Sony held their event now, before even the casing was finalized, was because of people like SuperDae, or whatever his name was, having access to real specs and pictures of the controller. They knew everything was about to burst wide open and steal all the buzz away. Why not hold a reveal before it got to that point? If they'd waited another month or two there would have been nothing to reveal. It came very close to that, anyway.

I think it all went well despite that, though. There was enough there to make Sony fans happy but there is also a lot that is being held back for future events. It still gives us things to be excited about in the many months before launch.
