Forums - Gaming - Rumor: Michel Ancel to leave Ubisoft

If I were him I'd leave. Ubisoft keeps promising that he can make the games he wants AFTER the next game. He's probably tired of being fooled.

It wouldn't surprise me if Ubisoft said to Nintendo, hey, Rayman being an exclusive benefits you a lot more than it does us, so we'd like you to subsidize some of the advertising.

I honestly thought the same thing, that Nintendo was paying some extra for this.

Is it really a disagreement by Ninteno and Ubisoft though? Or just Ubisoft?

I don't know.  There aren't enough details to judge.

I think it's possible Ubisoft might have demanded more from Nintendo than was originally agreed upon because they felt the Wii U's struggles were going to hurt sales badly.  They might have wanted Nintendo to cover some of that.  And, quite honestly, if that's the case, then I'm not entirely sure who to side with.  It sounds greedy on Ubisoft's part, but on the other hand, they were giving Nintendo major support that would probably hurt Ubisoft a lot more than a multi-platform release.  It's hard to blame Ubisoft if you think of it that way.

Of course, they could both be at fault for not being willing to reach a fair compromise.

As a WiiU owned who preordered the game and was rly pissed at the situation, I hope this rumor is true, cause Ancel leaving would be a big middle finger in the air towards Ubisoft. Finger in the air I wished I could give Ubi myself but sadly I can't, so go Ancel! lol

But if he went indy, I wonder if he will keep making console games (in that case I'm happy) or if he will jump the mobile bandwagon (that would be a waste of his talent)

What more could they want? Nintendo has been giving Rayman attention and Rayman Legends was the only playable demo for some time.

I really want to know what were the disagreements between Ubisoft and Nintendo.

WOW, Ubisoft's mistake of delaying Rayman could prove far more costly to them than we imagined..

Actually, the rest of the rumor states, "Gamekult reports that this imminent departure is not the result of Rayman’s delay, but more of a cause".

It's just speculation, of course, but as the article cited "promotion" as one of the issues, I would guess that Ubisoft wanted Nintendo to do more advertising for the game.  That could be in-system or perhaps even by featuring Rayman in Nintendo commercials and outside advertisements.  The distribution part, I don't know, unless it had something to do with a digital distribution deal.

Well Nintendo were already on board to publish the game in Japan... We can probably assume that won't be happening anymore.
