Well, the total PS3 shipment as of end of 2012 is in the 74.5-75M range, for this to be true Sony should have shipped around 2M units since then.

Possible? Dunno, we'll find out soon enough.

in some ways i hope MS does go that route.  would make ps4 far likelier to "win" and right now sony really needs a win.  not just for playstation, for all of sony.

Even though Tretton works for SCEA, He still would have information on WW sales. The ironic thing is when Greenburg tweets about 360 at 66 million last year and Major Neslon tweets about 76 million this year there's no question. But when Sony does it, take it with a grain of salt? please.

In line with my estimations... 75m+ as of Dec 2012... near 77m as of Mar 2013.

And yes PS3 is undertracked here about 1 million... VGC is showing 3 million units on shelves at the end of 2012.

There is a good possibility do PS3 outships 360 at Q4 2012 (this quarte) and certain for Q1 2013... the question niw is when PS3 will outshell Wii (yeap it will)

Man that is an excellent way to put yourself out of business right there (at least as far as Microsoft's gaming division is).

I would be VERY unhappy if the next Xbox had no used games. I would still buy it for Halo 5 and 6 and other exclusive titles, but I would probably end up buying a PS4 and using that for all the multiplats (especially now that the controller is almost like the Xbox controller).

I have to think so.  I mean it hasn't even hit $200 yet and the PS2 had that in what?  A year?  2?  So it still isn't really in mass market pricing.  $150 and if they ever get it down to $99 will provide some boosts as well.  I expect their support to stay until 2016 at least probably 2017

Guys, he has no idea how much 360s have been shipped in the same time frame. He is promoting his brand, its PR.

It looks like he guessed that figure off the top of his head, so i wouldnt go cracking open a bottle of Champagne just yet.

If Ps3 ships or sells one more console than 360 what does it matter? I dont think the 77 number was confirming anything. He is basically saying we launched a year after 360 with a ridiculous price point (which is nice to hear and should factor into the pricing of the PS4) and we have now basically sold the same possibly more consoles than the MS. The 360 and PS3 are basically even in terms of consoles sold doesnt matter if you choose to believe your console of choice is up.

But the thing is Sony really didn't do it. When Major Nelson does it he has the data in front of him. When Tretton did it he has no idea. He is just throwing numbers out there with no source. And before you say well he must hav known the nubers I say BS. Why?

1. He didn't just pull the numbers right before some random interview

2. By saying "if not more" confirms he really doesn't know.

I wish certain posters would stop jumping to conclusions with Sony shipment numbers and trying to pass them off as fact. Any time we get very vague to no numbers the same group of people pull some numbers out of their ass and go "whelp it must be this many shipped" when in reality they don;t know. However they are allowed to add itin their thread title.
