The PS4 is a good mid-range gaming PC (with a much better software tools platform). Every day, people walk into stores and buy $500-$700 mid-range gaming PCs. Suddenly when it comes to paying $500 for a PS4, the moaning and bickering starts...

$499.99 NA. I'm not sure how to guess other markets.
I just spent so much for Wii U for my gf and I'm good even if it's over $500.00. I do have to live up to my username :)

$450 making a profit (or a very small loss). Lower than that will probably be selling at a decent loss (or really big loss).

This is a very shallow analogy. A gaming PC and a video game console provide different, if overlapping, utility.

My "moaning" has to do with several things: the world economy is far from healthy; the PS4 has to contend not only with its eighth-generation rivals but with two of the most popular, versatile consoles ever made, which, like it or not, will continue to host high-profile third-party games; and there is increasing competition from smart devices. You were quick to cite the popularity of PCs in your comment, but those are quickly losing ground to tablets.

Many consumers balked at the price tag of PS3 in 2006 in a much healthier economy. It could easily happen again.

Is easier to justify the purchase of a PC, is not only an entertainment machine, it is also used to work, do homework, and the interface (mouse and keyboard) does not scream GAMING.
