Forums - Sony - PS4: Has the Playstation brand been XBoxed?

Or at least PC'd here.

I saw the following:

* Integrated memory.

* X86 technology..

All that would end up being left is for the PS4's online model to be one that would require a subscription fee to be like XBox Live, and it looks to me like it goes far more the XBox route.  Out iss the memory split, specially designed chips and other things.  

I am not saying this is a bad thing, and might be necessary or the best choice, but I am seeing the influx of the PC design approach here with the integrated memory of the XBox platform.  Please feel free to speak and show otherwise here.

Yep. Previous PlayStation consoles were designed so independently and differently (at least up to and including the PS3, which was the culmination of this).

Then this generation happened, and in 2011 PS Vita released, touted as being incredibly developer-friendly. Anyone expecting Sony not to take this route with the PS4 would've been pretty blind.

Good move, imo. At some point, tradition needs to change.

x86 seems like the cpu to learn.. most ppl know it and that grants you the support you need.  RIP cell

Considering the PC has been the proving ground for developers to get their start, it shouldn't be surprising Sony went in that direction, particularly of they decided to have input from the developers.  It is not only RIP for the Cell and other costly initiatives by Sony to do a new chip, it is the end of custom chips made by consiole makers.  The original XBox approach is now far more the norm, with maybe some customer accessories to.  And, it is also RIP to being able to play your old games.  I saw nowhere in there where Sony is enabling backwards compatibility, just access to older content.
