Considering the PC has been the proving ground for developers to get their start, it shouldn't be surprising Sony went in that direction, particularly of they decided to have input from the developers.  It is not only RIP for the Cell and other costly initiatives by Sony to do a new chip, it is the end of custom chips made by consiole makers.  The original XBox approach is now far more the norm, with maybe some customer accessories to.  And, it is also RIP to being able to play your old games.  I saw nowhere in there where Sony is enabling backwards compatibility, just access to older content.
