Because free online was a big selling point for PS3 and it could be the difference between someone picking up a PS4 or an XBox 720.

This.
Even though this article doesn't say this. If online multiplayer become a pay service I would demand a refund on my PS+, sell my Playstation products, sell my account to someone, and buy a Wii U or a gaming PC.
Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

Kotaku rumors should be taken with a grain of salt but theyve broken MAJOR stories and have some serious pull in gaming media. They revealed Screenshots, artwork, and story details on MW3 months before it was even announced. They were the first outlet to reveal Playstation Home. In fact they breal news all the time. Sometimes they are wrong but they definitley have some big connections |
I only said they did a piss poor job of vetting their sources. They don't do enough due dilligence to determine the veracity of the claimant that is in fact providing them a story for them to reprint in their own words. As far as I am concerned you don't get a gold star for being a clearing house for educated specularion, and random roomers. Kotaku churns out so many stories, and posts so many rumors. That just by the laws of probability they are going to strike pay dirt from time to time.

Both companies have their market now. There is to many things like friends, achievments/trophies, and games that people are to invested in to fully switch. Why would people switch if they both cost money? Your friends and everything are on a certain system and people will stay on that system regardless.

Really, buddy it's not that bad. You already paid for PSN+ why not pretend that the online is free. But you should get a WiiU anyway though. ;)

Only hardcore gamers are invested. The average 360 gamer has no problem switching to PS3 and from PS3 to 360. I cringe every time someone claims this.

Well plenty of my friends have switched over to PS3. They're not hardcore games though, but then again most people aren't.
I think you are overestimating the value of Achievements/Trophies and a simple friends list.

I'm glad you feel that way. But what if Playstation World is one subscription and PS+ is another? Would you pay for both or give one up?
My bet:
Online play, and MAYBE messaging/chatting ability - FREE OPTION
Cross Game Chat, PS+ Features, Gaikai, Netflix, entertainment apps, etc - PAID OPTION
Sony will strip it down I feel, to the bare minimum of online play for free. Might even have to pay up if you want to use a mic, or to crossgame chat with others at least.
The costs of online services is only going to increase more and more as companies add more apps and streaming services like Gaikai and they have to recoup those costs somehow!
