They're not going to do that. I would bet on it.
Even if they did though, Playstation Plus is such a great value and I would gladly pay for it to play online.(If I wasn't already)

MS is getting away with it amd is getting hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars a year in revenue

The rumor could be 100% true and PSN could still be free. I'd be really surprised if all the current stuff and cross-game chat cost extra since they are already free on Vita. Sony would have a hard time explaining this since it's the exact same network. Gaikai, video uploading, and all that next-gen stuff can be hidden behind a pay wall though since it can be advertized as "premier."
I don't like PlayStation World though. If they want exclusive features they should just stick them in plus. Otherwise $50 a year becomes $80 a year.

It isn't like it is helping Sony. They are neck n neck is sales. So it isn't like Sony is ahead by 5 million consoles due to free online gaming. Microsoft makes a bazzilion dollars from Gold members. Why wouldn't Sony want that?

So the smart thing to do here would be to start charging gamers for something they already use for free?
Sony already has the optional PS Plus that offer exceptional value. Re-branding it for PS4 and adding Gaikai-based features is as far as they'll go.
Belive it or not, free online on PS3 is a big selling point. It will be for PS4 as well. Especially now with increasing competition from Ouya and the upcoming Steam Box.

Is it stupid? What if Sony captures a large part of the market share? They've built their platform on free online multiplayer. MS is getting away with it for now. If their popularity standing was to change due to other forces (features, timing, pricing, power, services, phenomenon) charging for online multiplayer won't be a very good business model.
Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(
