Developer: PlayStation 4 was designed for American gamers

Japanese developer Toshimichi Mori, the man behind the BlazBlue fighting games for the PS3, recently commented on Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 4 console.

While Mori was generally impressed and looking forward to it, he had some reservations about the social features Sony is building into the PlayStation 4.

In a recent interview with Japanese PlayStation magazine Dengeki, Mori shared his thoughts on PlayStation 4′s social features and how they’re not suited for the Japanese market.

Mori said that the PlayStation 4 social features and the integration with social networks such as Facebook was created for American and European gamers, as the Japanese are generally much more private. Facebook isn’t as popular in Japan because people prefer not to use their real names online.

Sony has confirmed that it’s possible to use your real name in your PlayStation 4 account, or your PSN user ID.

Mori said that the PlayStation 4 was designed for North American gamers in particular, where Facebook, YouTube, etc. are popular, where people share a lot of content. It isn’t that way in Japan, where most people prefer to stay anonymous online. But Mori understands that “the Japanese market is unique”, and that there are big culture differences between the two sides.

Finally, Mori confirmed that he and his studio are working on a new PlayStation 4 game. He didn’t give any further specifics, but we expect it to be another entry in the BlazBlue series. If you haven’t heard about BlazBlue, you’re not alone. The fighting games have only been released in Japan.

The Japanese gaming culture has always been different from the Western world. Game arcades are still very popular in Japan, and the type of console games they play can be quite different from what we play. For example, first person shooters are some of the worst selling titles in Japan, while in the US and Europe, they’re always at the top of the sales charts.

Sometimes I feel like a Japanese gamer who happends to be in the United States.  I am excited about the PS4 and the games, the whole Facebook stuff means nothing to me as barely use that site or similar ones.

PS4′s Share button was Sony Santa Monica’s idea

DualShock 4’s Share button was pitched to SCE bosses by Sony Santa Monica creative director Nathan Gary, Shuhei Yoshida has revealed.

As part of a far reaching interview on PS4’s creation – in which he also explained why Knack was revealed first at PlayStation Meeting – Sony’s president of Worldwide Studios recalled that the new pad’s headline social feature was pitched after months of discussion about PS4′s social features and implemented into the new DualShock design almost immediately.

“After the core hardware, the CPU and GPU, had been decided the project shifted to designing and discussing what should be the user experience of people who be playing games on PS4,” Yoshida told us. “So we formed the cross-functional groups of people from SCEI hardware group and Worldwide Studios and Sony network services teams to meet every month, almost. And Mark [Cerny] was heavily involved and leading some discussions. And the idea of sharing and seamless integration with social networks, that was heavily discussed.”

“I think it was [creative director] Nathan Gary in Santa Monica studios who suggested it: how about adding a dedicated button on the controller so that everybody can just press that button to share? He was helping out the external development, heavily involved in helping the development of Journey and Unfinished Swan at Santa Monica Studios.”

“So Nathan put together a Powerpoint and pitched in this Share button idea,” Yoshida added. “And we all went, that’s a brilliant idea! So it was a pretty quick decision after he suggested it and I’m sure he’s pretty proud of his contribution. That was after many months of discussion of how people should be using the PS4 system and sharing was one of the central experiences we wanted to include in the system’s development.”

You can read more from Yoshida and firstparty studios Guerrila and Evolution in Edge magazine, on sale now. You can buy or subscribe in printon iPad, on Google Play and through Zinio.

You can find out how Evolution Studios influenced the design of PS4′s DualShock 4 pad and why the new console is more than a high-end PC, according to Guerrilla Games, through the links. We also recently published an interview with Michael Denny on the five years’ planning that led up to the PS4 reveal.

Zipper was working on a title for the PS4 before closing

Studio behind the SOCOM series was working on two projects to announce.

According to the LinkedIn profiles of former designers from Zipper Interactive, the studio was working on two new titles yet to be announced, including a first-person shooter for the PlayStation 4.

Apparently, the title would be the beginning of a new intellectual property, but both projects were put on hold at the closure of the studio behind the SOCOM series, and there is no information about the second project.

The studio, which has reached a status greater recognition to the SOCOM series and MAG title, launched its latest title, Unit 13 for PlayStation Vita, in March 2012, three weeks before its closure.

Metro Last Light announced for the PS4!!! Will be looking to find source. If you'll find one first Hawke, don't hesistate to provide cheers!

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!

Metro: Last Light Confirmed For PS4, SDK May Get Released, Five DLCs Planned

Metro: Last Light has gone Gold, and it seems that 4A Games and Deep Silver have big plans for this new Metro game. According to an interview with the Ukrainian tech website itcchannel, Metro: Last Light will be coming to PS4 and a multiplayer game based on Metro: Last Light will be released as a separate title.
According to 4A Games, an SDK for Metro: Last Light may get released. This will be amazing – in case it happens – as it will bring lots of mods to this new Metro title, something that a lot of our readers have been asking for.
4A Games also confirmed that Metro: Last Light will receive five DLCs. Naturally, it is said that development in these DLCs started after the completion of the base game. These five DLCs will be different story missions from the point of view of other characters.
As we said earlier, the multiplayer mode of Metro: Last Light will be released as a separate game. It is said that Deep Silver and 4A Games plan to release this standalone MP game at least half a year after the release of Metro: Last Light.
4A Games also hinted at a Season Pass, though it has not confirmed it yet.
You can view the complete interview below. Kudos to Metro: Last Light’s forum member ‘Komodo Saurian’ for translating some parts from it.

Awesome thank you! Was just going to do it, but it's such a pain in the ass to do anything with a phone here...couldn't even paste the link :P

As for the game itself, was planing to get it for the PS3, but now I'm sure to get it on the PS4, I bet it will be like night and day performance and graphics wise. And it supposedly will also come with Metro 2033 as well, don't know whether it's a rumor or confirmed though.

Yep.  Using a phone is a pain

Probably "it comes with Metro 2033" is a rumor
