AMD’s chief graphics architect really likes the PlayStation 4

While at GDC, I had the chance to sit down and speak with AMD’s Chief Graphics Product Architect, John Gustafson. While he remained silent when it came to Microsoft’s next generation Xbox, he had a lot to say about Sony’s recently announced PlayStation 4.

“The PlayStation 4 blow me away but I’m concious about being to positive about it because of course we have other partners that are competing,” said Gustafson at GDC.

During their big PlayStation 4 reveal back in January, Sony revealed that rather than creating their own hardware like they did with the PlayStation 3, the PlayStation 4 will adopt AMD created chipsets.

AMD also procides the graphics horsepower behind the Wii U, a fact Gustafson was quick to point out when asked about his feelings on the PlayStation 4 and the fact that it’s the only true next-generation console that’s been revealed so far. “Of course there is the Wii U too, we have, AMD parts in there,” said Gustafson.

He also seems to be very impressed with the specifications Sony has revealed so far about the PlayStation 4.

“It looks like they did an extremely good job of the engineering… The CPU and the GPU are on the same chip, which solves a lot of the problems (you don’t have to toss things over to a graphics card and try to get them back and forth).”

Going into specifics, Gustafson explained how he expects next generation physics engines on the PlayStation before to be more realistic than we’ve ever seen before. He also emphasized that the console’s 8 GB’s of ram will give developers a significant amount of breathing room when it comes to game development.

Gustafson also expanded on the potential he thinks the PS4 has when it comes to purposes outside of gaming, especially if it were used as some sort of server. According to him, all it would take is a few modifications and you’d have an amazing computer platform for all kinds of purposes.

Since the PS4′s architecture is so similar to that of a high-end PC, once hackers get their hands on the actual console, I imagine it won’t be long before they find a way to turn it into an actual computer and more than just a game console.

Production of Heavy Rain game with Multiplayer?

Job Offer may terminate future project.

Just four months of the launch of Beyond: Two Souls, the upcoming title from David Cage, appeared on an internet ad offering employment to an employee who had a good knowledge of gender Multiplayer.

This announcement may terminate future projects of Quantic Dream, since adding a mode for more than one player Beyond would be extremely unlikely given the advanced state of production. Thus, we are led to believe the producer in question is already thinking seriously on your next flight.

According to the advert, the studio responsible for production of Heavy Rain is looking for Online Developer who has a strong knowledge on gender Multiplayer. According to the information released, this candidate should also have a deep perception in relation to games Online and development network.

In the past, the Director of the company had made interesting statements in this regard.According to David Cage: "There are many exciting changes to our hopes as far as the online space. So this is something that we will begin to explore in the near future."

Apparently, the "near future" is just around the corner. We are waiting for more information.

Insomniac Games on the PS4: ‘Sony is doing is a very positive note for the console industry’

It’s no secret that Sony’s PlayStation 4 is getting heaps of praises from developers worldwide. We recently reported how Avalanche Studios CTO believes it will out-power most PCs for years to come and how Dishonored’s designer believes that the 8GB GDDR5 RAM is an absolute joy. In short, the initial reception to the PS4 has been staggering, to say the least.

Insomniac Games who have developed PlayStation exclusives like Ratchet and Clank and Resistance, believes Sony are doing the right thing with the PlayStation 4 and this is a positive note for the console industry.

Ted Price, Insomniac’s boss had the following to say: ”I’d say that what Sony is doing is a very positive note for the console industry and I think it mimics what most of us in the traditional game development business are doing, and that’s thinking differently about how the future is going – how we want to exist in a future where mobile and free-to-play and different methods of delivery are such an important part of the industry.”

“So we are all becoming much more versatile and flexible as developers and business people and taking off the blinders in terms of who we are. I think you can see that in Sony as well in terms of their console approach,” he said to GIBiz. With Sony removing the extra steps for a small developer to put the games on the platform, PS4 sure has won a lot of respect among the developer community.

But how will the games stack up? That is all that matters in the end. We will know more as E3 approaches in June. Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

On a side note we would absolutely love to see Ratchet and Clank return on the PlayStation 4. It’s been a long time since gamers have got their hands on a proper installment.

The Last of Us Teasing PS4 Release Date?

Speculation is in abundance on the web regarding Sony’s next generation PlayStation console, and most analysts and game journalists are predicting that it is likely to release some time in either October or November of this year.

So it came as quite a coincidence that Naughty Dog had placed this specific date in one of the scenes in their latest game.

October 17th 2013 is clearly stated on the board as the date of evacuation.  Perhaps October 18th is when the PS4 will launch?  Or could it be a new trailer for a PS4 game, maybe even Uncharted 4?  We know it sounds a little far-fetched, perhaps we are being a little too optimistic with this one, but Naughty Dog has teased announcements within their games before, so maybe there is something here.

Watch Dogs creative director talks improvements for PS4 version

Watch Dogs is just one of a few cross-generational projects confirmed for the PlayStation 4. Along with Sony’s new console, the open-world title will be arriving on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC.

Just how will Watch Dogs leverage the new power provided by the PlayStation 4 hardware? Creative director Jonathan Morin explained to GamesTM this month that players can expect visuals and AI improvements as well as “more realistic consequences to your actions”.

“When the PS4 showed up it did bring new possibilities to improve graphics and every AI systems we have. But in the same way we did for four years already, we will continue to look beyond what is possible to achieve in order to bring this little something extra out there for players to enjoy. So expect more AI behaviors, more realistic consequences to your actions and an overall improvement in visuals realization. Our team has been working on this very complex ecosystem for more than four years now; this is what is required to build such an intricate set of AI systems.”

Morin additionally told the magazine that the PS4 will offer enhanced processing power and memory, but it presents exciting new challenges such as “the time and the quality of the resources” needed to take advantage of the improved specs.

“What the new machine brings is new processing power and memory to run these things, but the biggest investment is always the time and the quality of the resources required to pull it off. So not only does the next generation bring more possibilities, but it also brings new challenges that we believe are extremely exciting from both a player’s and a developer’s perspective.”

One final note from Morin: he said that “Both the E3 demo and the PS4 conference demo were played in real-time.”
