Forums - Sony - What if PS4 was $299, but took a $200 loss?

I think they could go $350 with a $100 loss for a start. Remember these systems are a marathon not a sprint especially Sony systems. They can take a $100 loss at the start and get the install base up knowing those fans will buy lots of games over the lifetime of the console and maybe have a PS+ subscription for a couple years too.

It won't. Sony can't afford it, especially not now. They suffered a loss with the ps3 and look how that went for them. They could sell at a loss, not that much though.

hell im all game for cheap consoles lol.... a cheap 4 saves me a few bucks to get the x8 (is that 8 or infinity). that being said if they do come in cheap they would sap up a higher percentage of ps3 users early on in the cycle. 299 is cheap enough that their 1st year can blow up. besides yall are forgetting about plus. software, plus, and peripherals would be enough to make the loss minimal.

theres a reason wii sold well and its not just because its casual

Well Sony can't afford to, but if they were to, it'd likely fly off the shelves

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

no it wouldnt, MS can lose much more then sony can

except they won't, microsoft won't go in the red for 3 generations in a row

So you say MS is not making profit with 360 this gen? Interesting... Any proof?

yes

You'd need to sell MANY games to balance out a loss of 200$. I don't think it'll happen.

Yeah... but this time you'd also other services that make money. I'm sure they profit from all the TV aps like netflix/lovefilm etc. and PS+. If Sony managed to get 10 million people subbed to PS+ (doesn't have to only be on PS4) they'd be making £400,000,000 more or less per year directly from it. Not all of that would be profit of course, but you have to imagine they'd still get a large chunk.

what profit?

Besides, if PS+ and other part of Sony gaming business are really that profitable, why don't we see Sony make more money this past FY?

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

Those numbers are old and MS division include much more than gaming consoles, like great successful products as Kin, Zune or Windows Phone :)

MS has black numbers this generation with the 360.

Suicide.

if you sell it for a high price and 200 loss the first year or so you could maybe get it back because only gamers buy it who buy many games and stuff on average, if you sell it for a low price with 200 loss per console, many gamers will buy it who buy less games on average because they have not so much money or don't want to pay so much for gaming. that would be those who would normally wait for a price reduction and those who often buy games only after price redcution.

so, selling a console for a low price and 200 loss could be a financial failure.

yes they would have more ps+ subscribers then and marketing costs would be lower per console in the first years but i don't think the average customer of such a "low" priced console would really buy so much other stuff to get back the 200 loss of every sold console.
