Forums - Gaming - To Clear up confusion on what makes a AAA game

Yes it is a pretty known fact that AAA stands for the budget. The problem is that kids get/got confused...

Back in the time when GTA 3 and MGS2 were in the works plenty called those AAA games because of their budget but many thought it was because of the quality.... It is a normal thing though... Plenty of AAA games get a lot of hype and end up being good quality or atleast in the eyes of the people who were hyped for it so it is very hard for them to use AAA only for high budget games.

this is why wii never got a AAA title, I guess Nintendo might throw more money in games this gen and finally get a AAA game

So I'm confused. Super Mario Galaxy isn't AAA? Xenoblade Chronicles isn't AAA? A COD port isn't AAA? And isn't the AAA bar for the Wii as far as budget is concerned set a little lower, considering development costs are lower?

nope they were to cheap to make, super mario galaxy probably cost less than a game like haze and xenoblabe would have been a xboxlive or psn game if it was release on the HD twins

Have you ever played Xenoblade? Cause if you think its a PSN or Xlive quality game then you are delusional.

if you say so

Xenoblade Chronicles is as AAA as the Wii gets. Keep in mind it's basically running on 6th gen hardware.

This is true. But on my PC, it looks like a 6th gen HD remake. :)

You sly devil. :p When I upgrade my PC, that's the first thing I'm gonna do.

I couldn't get my ripper to work on my Wii.  I downloaded a quick wind waker torrent to make sure I had dolphin and all installed correct.  Used wind waker cause it was a small game size with large seeders.

Wind Waker worked, but none of the games I tried ripping myself worked.  I tried like 5 of them.  So sadly I'm playing Xenoblade still on my wii.  Though it still looks amazing on that though, so not a huge deal.  But I've seen videos of this game running on dolphin and it looks amazing.

Yeah, I just upgraded my PC last month and it was well worth it considering the small amount of upgrades I actually had to do.

My thread:

What I upgraded:

OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W Modular High Performance Power Supply - Link

Sapphire Radeon HD 7770 GHZ 1 GB DDR5 - Link

And what I suspected would happen has happened. I want MOAR POWAHS! So, I'll probably build myself a PC next year.

I used Cleanrip

Installed homebrew, then cleanrip then it ripped my game onto a sd card and transfered that to my pc.

Strange thread.

It's not really based off budget and it certainly isn't based off Metacritic (seriously?). It's a RETAILER designation that has to do with sales projections.

It doesn't matter if a game costs $100 to develop, if the expected sales are high, it gets an AAA rating. Likewise, a game can be horrible, but if the sales are expected to be high, it doesn't matter, it's also AAA. It's for retailers to look at to determine investment potential.

Yes, it's true that AAA games are often high quality and have large budgets, but that's beside the point. No one in the retail industry really cares about that (other than perhaps advertisement budgets). While those are good indicators, they are NOT definitive.

I used to get the listings every week from Engram Entertainment. I was in charge of purchasing, I decided what our store did or did not buy. It has to do with projected sales potential. "AAA" is nothing but a way to designate blue chip products.
