Forums - Sales - January 2013 NPD Thread - 360: 281k, Wii U: 57k, PSV: 35k

This moths was not good for Nintendo future... Wii U and 3DS had bad sales... just DS and Wii had good sales but that's not good for Nintendo... I think they want to sell more Wii U/3DS than DS/Wii.

PSV did terrible... I think after one year it really dead... maybe a new cheaper hardware version can help but the things are bad.

PS3 did good... 350 great... the drop yoy is not that big close to 10% than 20%.

A lot of adjustments... I didn't see adjustments this year for 2012.

Edit - If the things continues without adjustments over the next weeks I will begin (again) the under/over trackez campaign (I know it's annoying but necessary).

You can't cross these numbers...

Quoted for the next page.

Actually, disregard my previous statement about the numbers not adding up.  The only thing I can think of is that MS actually had a markethare closer to 45%, but didn't round up.  I have to give them kudos for that, if true.  Let's say it was actually 44.8%.  That would mean Wii+PS3 = 346K.  Now, let's say the Wii sold ~122K, this would leave 224K for the PS3.  Of course, the PS3 could be lower by 2K, while the Wii is higher.  Still, only ~60K less than the 360.

What do the 3DS numbers mean in context? Compared to DS, or PSP? Why the large drop from good Holiday sales?

3DS.... What happened? Why so low :(

I thought Nintendo pulled the plug on the DS?

Haven't heard anything about that, so I doubt it.  However, given that the 3DS only sold ~20K-30K more than the 7 year old Wii and the Wii U is selling the same as the 9 year old DS, Nintendo has one of two options that they must choose quickly.  They can continue to keep both the DS and the Wii on the market to help offset any loses from the Wii U.  This, however, will continue to cannibalize the 3DS and Wii U sales slightly.  Or they can quickly drop the DS and the Wii, and then hope that the majority of their sales go towards the 3DS and Wii U.

cool comparison from gaf

Jan-06 Jan-12 PS2 272,000 X360 281,000 GCN 66,000 PS3 200,000 XBX 89,000 Wii 100,000 X360 249,000 WiiU 57,000 Total 676,000 Total 638,000 3DS 145,000 PSP 179,000 NDS 70,000 GBA 172,000 PSV 35,000 NDS 158,000 PSP 10,000 Total 509,000 Total 260,000

  • Home consoles this January are down 5.6% compared to January 2006.
  • Handheld consoles are down 48.9% compared to January 2006.
  • The XBOX 360 and PS3 combined are selling better than the PS2, GCN and original XBOX combined (+12%).

It's interesting that Nintendo didn't put out a press-release if those latest numbers are true, as they sold more consoles in the US this January than last January (152k Wiis in January 2012, at least 157k consoles in January 2013, with Wii U selling for more than Wii on over a third of those units), but I suppose it's because weekly console rates were flat or down on a unit basis.

My guess is January went like this based on what came out-

X360 - 281,000 (56,200 a week, down from 67,500 a week last Jan)

PS3 - 220,000 (44,000 a week, down from 47,000 a week last Jan)

3DS - 130,000 (26,000 a week, down from 43,000 a week last Jan)

Wii - 120,000 (24,000 a week, down from 38,000 a week last Jan)

DS - 70,000 (14,000 a week, down from 19,000 a week last Jan)

Wii U - 57,000 (11,400 a week)

Vita - 34,000 (6,800 a week)

PSP - 10,000 (2,000 a week, down from 4,000 a week last Jan)
