You know what the most damning thing about those numbers is. If you can find a Vita. It is no longer being sold in a lot of places. It is usually at the back of the gaming section, and crammed into a teeny tiny little space. Whereas the Wii U is actually placed preferentially, and is allotted a great deal of shelf space. Sure the Vita worked itself into that position, but for the Wii U to barely be outperforming it with all of those advantages, and having just come off of its launch. Whereas the Vita has been a punching bag for over a year.
Well that says something about the console that goes beyond a lack of quality games, or a excessive price point, or even a lack of advertising. It says two things about the platform. The first being that Nintendo obviously did a better job of actually chasing off their core supporters then was previously expected. Nintendo shouldn't be exhausting its crop of early adopters this soon in the consoles life cycle. Unless they have effectively purged themselves of most of their most loyal players.
The second is obvious in that the hardware isn't at all compelling based upon a honest unbiased assessment. The console just doesn't seem to be swinging any impulse purchases, and that means that people cannot justify the purchase even if it is purely as a status symbol, or a over priced gift to earn affection. It just isn't at all good, and it appears to be that way for a couple important reasons. Before you even get to the price, games, or the advertising. Which isn't to say that those aren't problems.
I would also like to say that I can absolutely see the Wii U being the worst performing console for its launch window once you factor in inflation and market expansion. As for a straight up head to head against the Saturn and Virtual Boy. The Virtual Boy I can most definitely see that being the case, because retailers basically did everything to offload that hardware. Including eating just ungodly losses. While the Saturn most definitely qualify, because it didn't sell more then a hundred thousand units in its first four months on the market. Not that it even had a chance given it was a surprise launch, and it was only to be found at select retailers.
