Forums - Sales - 2012’s Best Selling Video Games for Australia and New Zealand Revealed

Vooks

The bestselling games for Australian and New Zealand in 2012 have been revealed and there aren’t too many surprises. The information comes straight from the NPD Group here in Australia and accounts for all games sold at retail, so no digital or Steam sales.

Unsurprising the top three games between the two regions are the same with Call of Duty Black Ops 2 taking the crown for bestselling game in Australia and New Zealand for 2012.

In second place was Assassin’s Creed III and in third was Halo 4. The FIFA franchise continues to grow with a 4th place in 2012.

The next three places are all Activision Blizzard games; they are Skylanders Giants, 2011′s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Diablo III. Although this won’t be the last time Activision Blizzard features on the chart.

Next up is Borderlands 2 from 2K and then it’s followed by another 2011 title in the form of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Last but not least is Skylanders Spyros Adventure, the original game from 2011 as well. It’s should be surprising to see so many games from 2011 outselling games in 2012 however when they’re Call of Duty, Skyrim and Skylanders it’s you can see why.

The New Zealand chart is pretty much the same however it features Battlefield 3, yet another 2011 title. It also features Mass Effect 3 and Farcry 3 which are missing from the Australian chart.

Sadly there are no Nintendo exclusive games on the chart at all; considering all of the games above are multiplatform aside from Halo 4 and Diablo III you shouldn’t be too worried. However Pokemon: White did chart last year for Nintendo.

Horrible.

In case you were wondering, this is what sony had to say about it:

Sony were upbeat about today's news, claiming a 47% value share and 44% share of unit sales in the local market for the PlayStation Brand. Additionally, 31% of software sold at retail this year was for the PlayStation 3, making it the number one platform by that measure, and the PS3 also managed to take the top hardware spot with 34% of unit sales.

“PlayStation 3 continues to go from strength to strength in New Zealand," enthused Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand's David Hine, "because it remains a great value, high definition entertainment solution for the family that offers exceptional games, movies, TV and music experiences.”

“This year, with anticipated AAA blockbusters on the horizon such as God of War: Ascension, The Last of Us, BEYOND: Two Souls plus more for the family with new titles for Wonderbook we are planning to continue the PlayStation momentum.”

Nintendo and Microsoft have not yet made any statements regarding today's iGEA announcement.

Meh. No doubt we will hear a bit more about those at E3. About the only Wonderbook idea that excites me is the Walking with Dinosaurs doc they are doing. The idea of playing with dinosaurs with a move controller I find strangely interesting.

back in 2008, nintendo basically dominated Australia/New Zealand, now it's the PS3 and to a lesser extent xbox

Also this list isn't very surprising
