Pretty good results for Square. I'm most impressed that they saw sales drop across the board, yet still managed to turn a profit. In other words, they made money by cutting their costs significantly compared to last year. That makes sense, since most of Square's current development is taking place on DS and PSP.
Too bad we didn't get a specific breakdown of individual game sales, or by platform. What was interesting, on the other hand, is Square's regional breakdown. In fiscal 2006, Square did the bulk of their sales in Japan:
95.5b Yen in Japan ($86.8m)
20.7b Yen in America ($18.8m)
6.0b Yen in Europe ($5.4m)
That's about 78% of sales coming from Japan. But in fiscal 2007, Square was even MORE lopsided in favor of the home islands:
100.5b Yen in Japan ($91.4m)
8.6b Yen in America ($7.8m)
4.7b Yen in Europe ($4.2m)
Square did a staggering 88% of their sales in Japan this fiscal year! They've been essentially nonexistent everywhere else. I guess that's what you'd expect given that most of the past year has been remakes and spinoffs for DS and PSP. However distasteful for gamers, kudos to Square for finding the most profitable platforms and succeeding financially in an industry where so many of their competitors are struggling.
But it would be really nice to see something arrive on Wii/360/PS3 sometime before 2009!
