their only luck was 3rd party disdain to Nintendo, everything Sony touched sooner or later is destined to complete obscurity, almost every bestseller from PS1 generation is irrelevant today (except GT), entire Japanese market bet on one brand on Sony, the entire Japanese market is globally irrelevant with exception of Nintendo and their handheld business. their entire war chest from PS1 and PS2 generation was flushed to toilet in their megalomaniacal dreams about supercomputer in your livingroom. They succeeded in only one thing, opened gates to GTA and CoD demographics, which reduced entire industry from family entertainment to bloodthirsty gun and blood theater.
And for this i personaly blame three companies, SQUARE, Enix and Capcom

they expanded the audience. Look at Sony's most popular IPs. LBP, Uncharted, Journey, Heavy Rain, Infamous, Crash, Heavenly Sword, Parappa, Medieval, God of War, GT, Spyro, Ratchet, Jak, Resistance, Killzone. Only the last 2 are the bloody shooter type (and R3 had some really creative weaponry). Sony makes new IPs every gen and they have great variety. Not to mention DOOM and Quake were the real shooters early on and they were on PC so I don't see how Sony can be blamed for that crowd considering they had no big exclusive shooters until PS3.

Uncharted, Resistance, Killzone, others are SOCOM, they of course create many new IP's because all are dead after few generation or few sequels, Crash is not Sony IP. The FPS are of course originally PC games, i ask one question, why call of duty sell so low on PC? Half Life franchise sells very well even on PC and PC can produce some very good selling games, those bloody shooters became popular on consoles, because playing games on console require no skills (installing, configuring), most of today's videogame demographics are 18 - 35. On PC this demographics group exist it play games like RTS and Simulators, those are true mature games, it requires some skills and some intelligence, they are mostly inaccesible to children.
Moreover, on PC even FPS offers superrior value (Moddings) and superrior quality and are far cheaper than on consoles.
Most Sony platform owners are driven by cool factor, they are not interrested in quality but in well known IP's, Vita suffers by this syndrome high quality Sony games are disregarded but poor quality trash is extremelly succesfull (2nd bestselling game on Vita is actually CoD with score ~4/10), Vita failed because it was not cool enough, it was replaced by iPhone, iPad etc).
They expanded audience, of course by flooding market with this kind of demographics
