I didn't know that. Which explains this then - as you say, they probably just ported the Tri netcode over.
On the plus side, the Capcom rep in that forum post mentions that he's passing on the negative feedback to try and change something. So you never know.
One reason: Latency due to sheer distance!
Monster Hunter is an action game requiring quick reflex moves. Having half a second or more of lag between players will only hurt the team.
