I think people like to think the government is still righteous and upholds justice above all, that they would not dare endanger their own citizens, more in the US than other places. Governments will do whatever they have to keep us from knowing what they don't want us to know. When somebody has served their purpose or wants to step out of line, they act. That's what I believe.
