To me, the main determining factors are release date, and increase in power relative to the preceding console from the SAME company. Comparing the console with it's competitors to make this determination makes no sense. In the Wii U's case, especially, when we don't even know what the other two consoles even look like.

A console being underpowered =/= not being next gen.

The issue with that is the xbox wouldn't be part of any generation. Same goes for the first console made by any company.

.....Wut?
Well check point 5 of my OP.........

yes.  We are in the 8th generation of games.  Not 8th generation of specific company or console.  if you interpret that wrong it's not my fault.

Just your grammer was all over the place in your previous post...Would you then say game engines are a better factor for determining gen rather than consoles?

No.  Graphics has nothing to do with what next gen means.  It simply means moving forward in technology.  i already anwered your questions and told you what it meant.  now im don here.  If you reply im still done here. Im not going to keep bumping your thread.

I never even mentioned graphics.

The hell is wrong with you tonight? You seem to be ping-ponging all over the place and two posts ago your post makes no sense whatsoever...And then you go off on one talking about bumping....If you are so sensitive over this topic, maybe it'd be best to skip over such threads in the future?

I guess I will be back in here for one more comment explaining that Im not upset even in the slightest.  And im not accusing you of bumbing.  I just think this is a worthless debate all together.  If people don't have the common sense to understand what next-generation means then it's not my fault.  I already answered your question and their is no need for more questions becaus it was pretty to the point.

As far as my grammar goes, I didnt read over my comment so it was just typos.  a lot of them lol

I actually stated in the OP that we may not need the label of console generation - so if you agree with that then say so. The issue is:
http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=5097156
That makes no sense. At all. If you want me to point out the issues with it I will.

Also common sense is not putting your hand into fire. What makes a console this or that generation is as far removed from common sense as humanly possible.

currently, the answer is 9th gen :P

the wii u is a next-gen system, because it does indeed do things that the other 2 current systems cant do. can either the xbox 360 or ps3 do co-op with each player having there own screen while playing black ops2 on the same console, besides the wii u. the answer is no... the wii u as well, has a controller that is truly a next-gen experience and only ppl who really put time into the system, can actually understand what i mean by that.
i am sure the next xbox and ps4, will have graphics that are truly impressive and other cool ideas, but they also need more than a in your face showcase of power in graphics, for me to be impressed or call them anything but a graphically upgrade and not a true catch your eye experience. i also dont want the ps4 or next xbox controller's to have a screen on them, because it wont feel fresh at all, but a copied idea.
i want cool new ideas on a console, i think all 3 can and will bring those to the plate. if all 3 dont do that, then i wont buy all 3 systems with my money. or will i develop for them either down the road.

Xbox would be 1st generation of Microsoft consoles and born within the 6th generation timeframe of console gaming.

But to determine it's within the 6th generation you have to look at hardware, no? Or would it be 6th gen even if it was 1khz cpu and 12 bit RAM?

6th generation just means games started 6 gens ago.  The 1st generation started in 1972 with the release of Magnavox Odyssey and lasted til 1977 when Pong came along
