Forums - Sony - The PlayStation 4; don't be surprised if it is "free" at launch

It will be like AOL CDs. Everytime you open your mail box, one or two PS4s will fall. They will come with every tech magazine too.

No PS4 for me if they do this. If I use my PS4 for just 5 years I'd have to pay 50*5*12=3000$

No way in hell.

No mate.  If they do it they will charge over a set contract period.
So 'if' the cost was $25 (much more reasonable than your $50) per month, it may be set over two years.  So 25x2x12 =$600.
Then, if you wish to continue using PS+ (assuming PS+ was included in the original subscription), I imagine you would pay a much reduced monthly fee from the end of the two years for as long as you wish.
What will be more interesting is whether Sony decides to charge for basic online, like Microsoft.

In this very post you yourself said that a game that costs US$60 is sometimes AU$80, sometimes AU$90, sometimes 100 or 110. So what kind of reference point can your price be for us?

Ah, but what kind of reference point can US prices be for us, when it fluctuates so much? That's the problem - no matter which currency you choose, it's not going to provide a solid reference point for everyone.

As for your comment about it being a forum, I'm going to point out something really important again: This came from an article. Pezus didn't come up with the OP, he copied it from a website (and provided a link to said website). Are you suggesting that Pezus edits somebody else's article? Or that a person writing an article doesn't have the right to use whichever currency they want?

I'm in the same position as you are and the US price is a very good indicator for me. When I hear the US price, I know what to expect in my country and I'm pretty sure you feel more or less the same. It's not the case when I hear the AU price - this number tells me absolutely nothing and that's the biggest difference and reason why we all should stick to something everyone can relate to. And if you're not buying this, then just accept the fact, that Australia is tiny and has it's crazy ways, while the rest of the world is huge and in this forum we're focusing on world sales, not just the fickle Australian market.

I didn't notice it was an article, my bad. But he could at least include a rough explanation as to what these prices mean in the rest of the world, something understandable for other people - that's what I would do. Still, the OP wasn't the only post in which you were talking about AU$, hence my postulate.

For god's sake, just Google the conversion like we all have to do. Talk about whinging...

I doubt free, but the $99 + 2 years PS+ / XBL Gold model is a distinct possibility. Sony and MS will want some money up front. There will always be bastards who do a runner with these deals, so there are losses to this model that don't happen with full payment upfront.

I"m against any sort of contracts for home consoles. It's a rip off to pay monthly bills for something that could cost only $200 in a few years.

Nope. If these home consoles sold with contracts are successful enough, then subscription services would become MANDATORY, not optional, just like with cellphones. XBox Live is already mandatory in a way. I would hate to see Playstation Plus go that route.

Subscriptions models won't work for consoles imo. Most people (obviously not counting hardcore gamers) don't see the value of online gaming (if that's the only thing the subscription is for).

This type of contracts make sense for things you use all the day like making calls, texting, using the internet etc. Online gaming alone won't do the job if companies are trying to attract non-gamers, so in order for this to work the console will need to offer a lot of things other than just pure gaming and the simple entertainment apps (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon video, etc).

Nintendo and PC gamer

The ones who would utilise this the most would be ones who have no idea of how to handle money (I can't recall how many dozens of families I've seen who have complained about not having enough money for their kids' food, yet are paying $100/week for a mobile phone contract). Gaming consoles under contract will only add to this burden.

For God's sake read and think about what you read before posting such a stupid comment. It's not about conversions, but I'm not going to repeat what I wrote a number of times in this topic.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

Is Microsoft having much success with their Xbox 360 contract scheme?

I'd assume so, what with the KINECT bundle having proved quite popular in the US and some parts of Europe.

I've never bought anything on contract, probably never will, and I think even if a contract offer stands, you'd be able to buy the console at full price should you want to.
I do expect that you still need to hook it up to the net for other reasons, though.
