Sony presents financials on a consolidated basis, meaning it shows revenue and expenses for companies as if they owned 100% , then pull out the net effect of the portions it doesn't really own. Sony the consoidated presentation was profitable, but Sony the actual company lost 10.8 billion Yen during the 3rd quarter. Hence the outlook for the year in its entirety remained the same, despite Yen depreciation.

The increase in sales for Sony came not from having actually sold more of something, but from how they incorporated Sony Mobile's sales differently this year. Whereas last year, Sony Mobile was accounted under Equity Method (pro rata share of sales reported), this year Sony is showing the whole piece. Hence the statement:
"On a pro forma basis, had Sony Mobile been fully consolidated in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year, consolidated sales would have remained essentially flat."

Sony's financial conditions in fact went downhill in this all important Holiday quarter. More Debt, Less Equity as a result of the net loss.

Yes, most of the Japanese companies are having favorable exchange rates, but still accumulating more debt and less sales. If the exchange rates all of a sudden reversed then they would not have much breathing room to make a profit.

I'm actually shocked by these results. One would of thought with current exchange rates, they would of easily posted a profit this quarter. I mean Nintendo posted 450 million net profit and Sony 115 million loss, how come? I'm at a loss of words here. Furthermore, posting a 6 million profit for the gaming division is simply disappointing and troubling. Once PS4 hits, their gaming division will post losses once more. I don't know what to take from this.

PS3 has now outshipped xbox 360.
PS3 stands at 76 million (if PS2 shipped a million) - 70.5m (if PS2 shipped 500k)
Xbox 360 stands at 75.9

How do you know? All we know it that PS3 shipments reached 70m in mid-November, right? Not all those 6m are for the last 1.5 months.

70 mil by last week of October. It was reported mid Nov but reached it in last week october

Not mid Nov or late Oct

It's Nov 4

6.8 PS3+PS2
2.7 PSV+ PSP

With that said I guess 6.2 PS3 and .6 PS2 personally. Bringing shipped to around 74.2m (Not even close to 77m). PS2 could be bigger still Vita and PSP probably had similar numbers.

0.6mil seems too low. Didn't it ship 0.6mil last quarter and that wasn't a holiday quarter. I would guess 1mil ps2, 5.8mil ps3. Though  might be wrong on that 0.6mil.

Well 2.8 combined Q1 and 3.5 combined Q2. Vgchartz users assumed 1m PS2 for Q1, which has mostly been proven right. That shipment was large enough to sustain Q2. If it did .6m last Q and 1m Q1 then that leaves PS3 at 4.7 then going by your figures PS3 is now at 10.5m PS3. PS2 at 2.6m. I think the general numbers is right for the year just the split up is unknown. Personally I think PS2 shipments dropped and PS3 shipments decreased by .3m for this Q.

at 13.1m combined they expect 2.9m for next Q.

In addition to this I think Sony expected 16m combined PS3+PS2. 13m from PS3 and 3m PS2 and they have not adjusted or changed these expectations. So I believe PS3 is higher while PS2 is lower from these calculations.

Now you are starting to think. The "accepted ps3 and ps2 numbers" are from guesses from ambiguous statements. Look at sales trends which are objective values and it paints a better picture. Those "acepted values" place the ps2 at 1.2mil for the last 2 quarters which makes up 54% of last years totals and during the slow period at that while all last year ps2 was on declines.

I think they posted some decent numbers. It's hard to come back from the situation they are in. At the end of the day they are heading in the right direction. This sort of thing takes time.

I was walking down along the street and I heard this voice saying, "Good evening, Mr. Dowd." Well, I turned around and here was this big six-foot rabbit leaning up against a lamp-post. Well, I thought nothing of that because when you've lived in a town as long as I've lived in this one, you get used to the fact that everybody knows your name.

PS3 is definitely undertracked though. Perhaps not as much as a certain Brazilian wanted us to believe but still clearly undertracked. Just to get rid of some gloom & doom.

Not sure if you are serious.... You should look at a calander

" 158 billion yen loss the same period the previous year."

Did Sony really lose over a billion dollars in one quarter last year?

Good old IDC.

Anyway.

(Reuters) - Sony Corp (6758.T) posted a third-quarter operating profit after a loss a year ago, supported by lower costs and proceeds from asset sales that are helping it offset weak demand for its TVs and other devices.

In the three months to December 31, Sony posted a 46.4 billion yen (316.5 million pounds) operating profit, compared with a 91.7 billion yen loss a year ago. The result was below the average 72.1 billion yen profit estimated by six analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Following a 67 billion yen loss in the previous business year, Sony stuck to its full year operating profit forecast of 130 billion yen, compared with a consensus estimate of 119 billion yen of 19 analysts.

One would of thought they would of posted a profit with current exchange rates. 6 million profit on gaming division. What are your thoughts about this?

Nintendo 450 million net profit.
