why fix something that does work?

I think this thread is pretty stupid.(especially because you ask for a new controller and sony already has the vita that can be used as a tablett, but not so volouminous and with modern touch screen)
A Nintendo fanboy should be able to realize that Nintendos current success is based on old boring tech and definitivly has nothing to do with innovation.I mean the zero innovative 3ds.Using old 3d screen tech from sharp and sony,
low tech hardware= psp style, analog slider/analog stick =psp, old DS design, low tech cam etc.
The 3ds success is based on:old zelda 64,the same old 3d/2d mario games and same old mario cart.

DS was innovative, wii was,3ds=zero innovation but max. success.Maybe Wii U sales will increase, not beceause but despite the tablett controller.Wii U will be saved by the good old old fashioned mario and link.

why should sony and ms innovate?to produce another wii u ?
pc gamers are using the mouse for 3 decades ,no need to change, the same with controllers.

Actually, I believe that what's gonna "save" Nintendo this gen is the Miiverse. It's just an awesome and great implemented idea, it just needs to be known by the general public. It's gonna be a hit when more people start knowing more about the system.

And, about the last part of your post, that's not true. PC gamers first used mechanical mouses, then optical mouses and, now, they use laser mouses. But that's not only it. Now we have laser mouses that go up to 8200 DPI, while a few years ago they went only to 5600 DPI! That's innovation there, friend. And change.

I believe that all next gen consoles will struggle in sales during it's first months/year. WiiU is just a hint of what's to come. But eventualy all consoles will have fine sales but not as good as this gen, I predict all 3 having around 60milion in sales.

Other than the maybe the last part, I tend to agree.  Nintendo may be the catalyst of what's to come.  Were gonna see how much the whole casual went to tablet argument really holds up in the next couple years.  Also, the economy is really poor still and it's gonna play a factor.

The economy isn't that bad. I think the gaming industry will eventually find it's stride :D

nah, it's pretty bad, have you not seen our unemployment numbers?  People are still buying heavily on credit.

i think it will too, but out of the gate I think it's gonna be rough for all three.  I could be completely wrong if Sony or MS are able to capture the masses with something really appealing.  I just see it as being really difficult to sell a lot of consoles at a high pricepoint.  Even the magic of Apple has slowed quite a bit.

Yeah, apparently the Wii U is not what the mass market wants. And the PS4 and xbox 720 will be no different, none of them will reel in the casuals this gen. Its a nice sentiment though, if you assume that the Wii U is going to win that must mean that the next PS and xbox will move less than 45-50 million each at the most, that's a drastic drop from the 7th generation hardware sales.

Also, OP, shouldn't you be creating hit & run religious threads?

Not a single PS3 owner is a casual gamer. I think everybody that had a PS3 this gen will buy the PS4: 70 million units, not bad at all

that's a bold face lie

Yeah, I didn't even bother to adress that one, first off he misinterpreted my post entirely (like I said in my reply to the other guy) and second, the claim itself is silly. By this logic, the PS3 should reach about 140 million or more lifetime since the PS2 installed base was that big.

The market is changing, nothing is guaranteed at all and claiming that A: PS3 doesn't have any casual owners, and B: one PS3 sale equals one PS4 sale by default shows a general lack of basic understanding of how the market and economy works at the core and the fringe.

Expecting it to be a battle between Nintendo and Microsoft in the 8th gen.

I have a feeling Sony is going downhill and will do badly everywhere, except maybe decent in Europe. Nintendo will take Japan while Microsoft will take the US.

The main reason Sony caught up with the PS3 to some extent is because they were just fine with selling the console at a horrible loss for a long, long time. Anyone with enough money in the bank can make the most powerful system and sell it at a loss to get people to buy it. I don't think Sony can/will do the same thing again for Vita/PS4.

it was still most expensive the whole gen and a year late.  Even then it was overshadowed by Wii explosion and then Kinect.  This gen's numbers show the lowest Sony is likely to go.  I mean they did pretty much everything wrong for 2 years, effectively giving no one a reason to buy their product over the competitors for the first 2 years 360 was out.  holiday 07 had some good title (R&C and Uncharted) but nothing big until MGS4.  They were more expensive and late (a combo that would mean death for any other of the big 3) not to mention their inferior 3rd party and crap advertising.  Even doing every possible thing to lose a gen they will still be 2nd at least and sell over 90 million PS3s.  I don't see how they could handle the first 2 years (probably the most important ones for establishing a fan base over the competitors) any worse so I can only see them going up from here.

I think Sony will do very well sales wise. Just look at the end of PS3`s generation: it`s selling more than anyone for one or two years. It had a bad start but it`s finishing really well and that momentum will carry on to the PS4.
