Forums - Sony - PS4 to launch in JP and US in 2013, and in EU 2014? More powerful than x3ox and with small touchscreen in new controller?

This is all well and good and I look forward to their reveal but what is Sony's recent obsession with power? PS1 & 2 were not the most powerful but they did amazingly well. PS3/Vita were and look where that got them. Last place and huge losses. Gaming history has shown the most powerful system has never ever won any generation either handheld or home and usually leads to big losses (Xbox, PS3). Sony is not even in a position to be playing this type of game anymore.
If they allow MS to undercut them on price with similar specs they'll have lost another generation. Why Sony? Why?

Well, a lot of the costs last time around were for the Blu-ray... And what else can they do? They can't have similar specs as Nintendo, because then they'd both get the same 3rd party support and Sony would get destroyed by Nintendos 1st party games... They need to compete with MS, as MS need to compete with Sony; they can't face off Nintendo on equal terms

PS3 is already facing off (and winning) against WiiU.    PS4 must counter 720 - and upstarts like Ouya/SteamBox.  But more power isn't the answer, better value is or some strong hook like Wii and Kinect had or at least getting out first.     Their new controller looks promising but after WiiU's launch (and Ouya) will just be new accepted form.  Doubtless MS new controller will also have some touchpad or such (be surprised if it doesn't).

It looks like MS will out-innovate, out price and be to market first (europe).  None of that bodes well for PS4.

More powerful than nextbox doesn't mean $600 fiasco. MS rumors make it seem as though it will be a solid game system but an excellent media center - MS want more than just gamers, they want everyone's living room. Sony is focusing more on gamers. Just my opinion.

This again?  Nintendo is great and Sony is great in different ways with first party stuff but Sony deserves way more respect when it comes to first party.  Sony makes new IPs and invests in game MS wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole (Sly cooper, Journey, Rain, Heavy Rain, Beyond, Flower, Unfinished Swan, etc.).  I mean Uncharted, Infamous, LBP, Resistance, Heavenly Sword were all created this gen.  If they had bought out Crash and done a Mario strategy with it (one big release every gen) it would be huge like Mario by now most likely (it was during PSone) but they take a different strategy of moving on and only keeping a couple franchises each gen (GT is the only one that they've kept from PSone that I can think of and it sells 10 million now so this proves my point).  Nintendo is awesome cause they polish their franchises for 25 years till they're a mirror sheen and keep platformers and old-school adventure going.  Sony is awesome cause they make new innovative IPs and push storytelling and have the best variety in the industry.  They are both awesome and Sony has sold an awful lot of PS3s on first party franchises and free online (since they've been most expensive the whole gen so 3rd party buyers go MS).

I'm sorry it it sounded as if I was implying that Nintendo makes BETTER games than Sony; what I meant to say is that Nintendo 1st party SELL way more than Sonys 1st party. Didn't mean to say that Nintendo=quality and Sony=garbage!! Did not mean that. I'm talking sales here.

Don't believe this, PS3 came out later in Europe due to problems with the bluraydrivesn, unless Europe has the same launch problems it will come out the same time.

It's just logistics.  The US is one place.  Japan is one place.  Europe is a whole bunch of different places, each with their own red tape.  I don't think it's ignoring Europe as much as it is NOT delaying the other two primary markets for the sake of Europe.

If it's a touchpad on the new controller, then it will be better at some things than the Wii U and worse at others, which is interesting.

If I were SOny I'd postpone the Japanese release in favor of EU; Wii U is already there and x3ox will probably not make as much as a dent there anyways, so Sony can focus on more urgent markets...

Yeah, it's gonna be interesting to see in what kind of fashion they'll use their screen!!

That's not exactly what I meant.  I'm saying that Europe would probably be delayed regardless, it's just a matter of whether they move back the US and Japanese dates to match it.

Japan is easy.  It's one country and small besides.  The US is easy, too, despite being big.  It's still just one country with one set of red tape to cut.  Once it gets to a distribution center, you just put it on trucks and ship it out.  Europe is several different countries, each with their own customs process and legalities to navigate.  The logistics are much more complicated.  I was just kidding about not being sympathetic but I do think it's understandable.

I have no idea how those things work, so i can't really argue with you about it. But Nintendo managed to realese their console WW within a month....

I hope it does; for both us Europeans and for Sony!

Well, PS2 were beating both of the 360 and PS3 (and possibly Wii?) in the beginning, and that didn't really matter anything for the out come of the gen... But I agree that value is what sell systems; Wii had great value, and Kinect had it as well, and it remains to see which console will have the greatest value this coming gen...

But yeah, I have a feeling that MS might take home this gen...

True and getting off topic here - I fear Nintendo has massively miscalculated  with WiiU.   They got away with the underpowered DS and Wii because they brought other new innovations to gameplay - more than mere power increase alone could bring.   The gamepad fails in this respect, leaving WiiU as nothing more than an HDWii without Wii's appeal (no motion controls in most games) and no games.   It will dwindle and die out with 360 and PS3, kept on life-support by periodic Nintendo classics.

Really? What about PS1/2, they managed against Nintendo's first party games. Even though that should be the first thing people look at when getting a console, it generally isn't.

Oh, they had superior 3rd party support. That ALWAYS wins! Well, until Wii came around...

Exactly. It's not at all clear what they need to win. If anyone knew exactly what they need to face off against the others, they would win every time. No company has managed that (except maybe Apple), so they have to guess

Sounds about right to me. Kinda what I have always expected from Sony. Feb20 should reveal much of these details. Interested to see what their ideas are with a nonscreen based touch panel on the front of the controller.

The record video feature makes my day.

I will show to everybody how great are my Gran Turismo's skills... I can show my Street Fighter God level skills too.

Love it.
