I hate Jim Sterling, but kudos to him for not being a raging ass this time around. I agreed with every single thing said in this article, and that's why I refuse to pay for Xbox Live Gold. I did at one point, because I was convinced by my Xbox playing friends that the PSN was glitchy, slow, and didn't work half the time, so if I Wanted to play games with them I needed XBL. Well, I paid for I think 16 months of Live, used it for maybe 4 or 5 months, and the rest went to waste for two reasons: 1 - My first Xbox 360 red ringed on me and I didn't get it replaced, and 2 - the replacement Xbox 360 is always making a grinding/whirring noise, so I'm too damn worried to use it half the time. Once it ran out in June 2010, I just didn't bother getting XBL again.
And seriously, I don't know how people are dumb enough to keep buying XBL. The downloads are a touch faster, and cross game chat can be awesome, but that's really all it offers you. Steam allows all of those features free of charge, and they all work better, too! PSN gives you more deals, and the speed and reliability are on par, even on the free service.
To be honest, I wasn't planning on buying PS+ for the same reasons other people don't buy PS+: I didn't want to pay an online subscription, and the random nature of what games make it to PS+ didn't really mesh well with my more pointed taste in games. Well, I've been proven wrong time and time again, and it's time to accept that PS+ is the only subscription I think I'll ever put money into again. The deals are just too good, the price is right, and the features really do help. Seriously, there's nothing as refreshing as going to bed, and waking up only to see my system has already done the updates for me. I know it's a small feature, but you ahve no idea how much it appeals to me.
I like the Xbox, I love its controller, and the system has some great games, but why in the world would I pay for a service that I can get free of charge elsewhere? Especially considering how many obnoxious little shits pollute XBL. I'll stick to my PS3 and Vita, thanks. (Though I will be getting the Nextbox alongside PS4 and WiiU when funds allow)
But seriously. Fuck Microsoft and their (effective) greed. Sony fucks up too, but the only real thing they do is in relation to the online passes, which doesn't bug me because I buy 90% of my games new anyway, and Online play isn't common for me.
