XBox 720 had been bothering me as a name, because I did see in a poll I ran, overwhelming numbers of people didn't think the next Microsoft console would end up being called an "XBox 720"?  However, there it is, over and over and over again, used by the game media, and people posting in forums, as a name for the next upcoming Microsoft console.  Real Steel also ran with it.  Well, I am deciding, rather than compalin, I was wondering if maybe XBox 720 could be adopted as the label for any future Microsoft console that has yet to be released, referring to the one that comes out right after the current generation of consoles.  In short, every single next Microsoft console that is due to launch, bears the "XBox 720" banner.  Anyone think this is a reasonably sane idea or has a better option that would stand a chance of being adopted?

It's a place-holder name, I honestly thought everyone knew that. People use 720 because it's generally understood that they mean "the next generation of Xbox", only it's a hell of a lot shorter to type. I don't see a problem.

They should certainly keep the Xbox name.

I bet my left nut it's going to be Xbox 8 but maybe the 8 will be turned to look like infinity.

The 720 has gotten around pretty good. Companies would pay a good amount of money for advertising to get their product to appear as popular as the Xbox 720 name today.

xbox3 would be a name. they can't keep up the "720" label; xbox 1440 and xbox 2880 - what kind of names are those? just ridiculous! and xbox8 would just be confusing for some people. No, xbox3 would be just fine.

They won't use Xbox3 for the same reason the didn't use Xbox2: They don't want to be a number behind sony. I think they will use Xbox Unity or some such.

My money's on Xbox 8. It will confuse some people, who will wonder where Xboxes 3 through 7 went, but:

- It will create synergy between all their products
- It's very simple to remember and rolls off the tongue
- They'll sound more advanced if Sony calls their system the Playstation '4'

Xbox 8 would be weird. Would the Xbox after that be called the Xbox 4 (fourth in the cycle) therefore be less powerful than the Xbox 8?
