Nintendo has revealed that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has sold 8.48 million copies on Switch and 1.5 million copies on Wii U, giving a combined total of almost ten million units worldwide. This makes it the best-selling Zelda outing of all time - but only if you don't include remasters.

The previous record-holder was The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, which sold 8.85 million copies across GameCube and Wii. If you factor in sales of the Wii U update, Twilight Princess HD, then it beats Breath of the Wild's total. The Wii U remaster is believed to have sold around 1.23 million units, which would make a combined total of 10.08 million copies for that outing.

While we're talking about remasters, it gets even more interesting if you include Ocarina of Time. That sold 7.6 million units on the N64 and 4 million units on the 3DS, making a combined total of 11.6 million units.

OoT3D sold over 5m though, the article is wrong and OoT is over a million further ahead still. I remember when it and Luigi's Mansion 2 would flip-flop in and out of Nintendo's official list before Pokémon Sun/Moon and UltraSun/UltraMoon knocked them both off that list for good. They were at 5m then.

Anyway it makes no sense to include it with OoT in this particular comparison so, BotW best selling Zelda game! Finally a 10m seller! I'm really happy about that, after so many generations there's finally a game that did it. So deserved.

Random toughts on the next game, but I'll post what I expect from the next one:

- Similar art style, locked 30fps and 1080p with better textures, animations and AI.
- A map similar in size and estructure to BotW.
- Dungeos similar to Hyrule Castle. The reward would be better gear or stats. Not too tied to the story.
- The same level of freedom, but won't be the focus.
- I expect the focus to be on the story, that people will have the "real freedoom" aspect of the game to manipulate or create depending on the events the player disclose in their adventure.
- Real time events. Different events occurs at the same time in Hyrule, but you can only be at one place. Our decision is going to change the game, like sidequests or needed gear to proceed.

I definitely like the idea of more dungeons like Hyrule Castle. Some underground dungeons would be appreciated also. I also agree that the reward should be some special gear or powerful item, and it should be entirely optional.

Good suggestion, and I think this will also be something they will move towards. Obviously they already tried a concept like this in Majora's Mask, and I think they are going to try to incorporate ideas done in previous games into the basic framework BotW created.

I agree on the dungeons, of there's one thing you can genuinely criticize BotW for it's the lack of dungeons on the OoT/TP/SS scope. However even though they're my favorite part of the other games, BotW did so much so brilliantly that I hardly missed them.

I actually prefer the dungeons in BotW.

They are open and with different solutions. Reminded me of the Forest and Water Temple in OoT.

I would have added some keys and made bigger the divine beats and would have been imo the best dungeons in the series.

I still prefer the ones in OoT and MM, then SS. WW ones I found easy and TP ones predictable and linear.

What if Breath of the Wild released on Game Boy Color?

Wow that’s great! I would play it and I would definitely love it. It’s amazing people actually go through the trouble of making these things.

It's pretty obvious by now that BotW has become THE game of the franchise.

Never before seen this kind of love for a Zelda game.

Talking about the game, the Great Plateau is my favorite tutorial and the begging is pretty iconic now.
