More possible reason: The financial situation of Sony.

For heaven's sake: Sony sold its Tokyo headquarter recently! This company is at the edge.

they sold it an have the money for it, but are still going to be using it for another 3 years... doesnt sound that close to the edge to me

It is when you pay rent on your HQ.

They just made a massive profit on doing so, they have other HQ's, please enlighten me on how Sony are "on the edge"

Around the Network

Personally I don't have a problem with multiple threads about this subject. If we can have a few dozen threads about the same dumb ass rumor that has just been reworded, and is being presented by a unnamed source which has no credibility. How is it at all incongruous to have a dozen or so threads that discuss the commentary by a named, and highly credible source. This is news those rumors are pure bullshit. This is worthy of serious discussion, because it is serious news.

The internet sites that are posting rumors are doing so for the hits. They don't care if their sources are reliable, and to be fair they aren't going to be held accountable if these rumors turn out to be false. There is absolutely no evidence for any of these rumors being true. We have no evidence that there are in fact PS4 development kits in the hands of developers. We have no evidence that the PS4 is in production, or that Sony even intends to release a console this year. If I am wrong prove it. Otherwise rumors aren't the same as facts, and you shouldn't treat them as such.

Crazily enough I am not a Sony fan, but I seem to know more about why the brand succeeded then most of the Sony fans on these forums. The first console dominated, because Sony created a better development ecosystem for their platform. Discs were far cheaper the carts, and Sony offered buy back on unsold games. Developers went with the guy that made them more money, and thus the console got more games, and thus more gamers came to that console. With the second console Sony continued on that model, but upped the ante by adding movie player functionality. In both cases Sony may have been weaker in pure power, but they were much stronger in creating a system where they could have many more games, and by providing more services.

Fast forward to today, and that differentiation that Sony used to get ahead looks to have about dissolved utterly as far as the current generation market is concerned. Specifically in comparison to Microsoft. Which actually provides on the whole a better development environment, and is probably going to provide a high end movie environment on their new platform. So yes Sony should be looking toward the raw power they are going to be putting out if they are going after Microsoft.

Sony needs at least one solid edge somewhere to compete. Yes like it or not Microsoft is probably going to get a good number more games that Sony is going to get, and they are probably going to get them sooner. Microsoft is probably going to support BluRay, and they also have a interface edge on Sony. Sony cannot even go for a cheap route, because Nintendo is going to be firmly entrenched in that space. So what is left for Sony to do other then trying to win the war on the merit of power. Which is something they probably can't do with a aligned launch. If Sony tries to go up against a winning hand without any kind of ace up their sleeve they are going to get smashed.

For once I would like to read one strategy on these forums for how Sony can regain dominance. Even when fellow posters try to bother it is almost pure dick stroking, and nowhere near grounded in reality. Show me where there is going to be a decided edge in Sony's favor. I want to know how Sony is going to out Microsoft Microsoft, or how it is going to out Nintendo Nintendo.

I was sure Hirai said they were waiting it out because they didn't want anyone stealing their ideas...
