Wouldn't it be nice if they decided to divulge any information about their mobile business aside from "activations?"

That's all that matters to Google. Why do you think they are investing in self driving cars? All they care about is how many people are looking at their ads. Everything else is just a tool to make that happen.

Uh-huh.

So how much does Google make from mobile ads, anyway? How much of that is search and how much from in-app ads? How much are they spending on traffic acquisition costs for those mobile ads? How many ads are to Android devices and how many to competing platforms?

How about the costs and revenues of other services like the Play store, Wallet or Maps?

And how much is Android development costing them?

Not even Google can simply put activations in a bank account. They're one of the most important companies in mobile right now, so why are they afraid to talk about dollars and cents? The word 'Android' doesn't even appear once in that link, and 'mobile' only ever follows on the heels of 'Motorola'.

This is as many details you will get from Google.

My main problem with Googles business model (I have many moral problems as well) is that the support system for all of the "free" software and services comes from search ads (display too but search revenue is much higher). This means that Google is 1 more popular search engine away from losing the support structure for every product they offer.

Google's Android strategy is flawless. It's pure genius.

I still prefer iOS though lol

I'm not going to pretend I know the exact figures or even a percentage. But what I do know is Google is an advertisement company. Everything they do is to get hits / views on their advertisements. The more people they can say will see an ad along with increassed real clicks/views the more they can make. What is the obvious answer to Android? That all that creates more people in their ecosystem using their search and other services.... all who view more of their ads.

Android is a huge part of that. As is GoogleTV (tv audience), gmail, play store (obviously brings in revenue per sale too, but not a big deal as they allow Android to have multiple markets), maps, calendars, etc etc etc.

Its all a portal to their ads. Again, its all that matters to them in reality. The only time they cut a service is when they feel it is not providing good avenue to their ads or is simply replaced or better served by a different service.

Really, why do you think they are investing so much into car tech? Do you really think they want to build a car? No... they want people to have more free time. To do what? Well, what do you see now when people are relaxing? They have their heads buried into their phones. So, if you're not driving... you're very likely to be on the internet using google search or other service and this is only multiplied by a large factor if you're using an Android device.

They don't need to break it down further. They don't want narrow-minded investors to clamour about Android or something else bringing down profits when in reality it creates profits by a large factor for other parts of their business.

In other words, the company that likes to boast about its openness is deliberately obfuscating details of their operations from their investors because they can't make a good business case for a lot of those operations. That's pretty much the point I'm driving at.
