Dragon Age 3 is "Stunningly Beautiful", Says Dev

"I think when we do start releasing screenshots, people won't be disappointed."

Dragon Age III: Inquisition is shaping up to be a visual feast thanks to the new Frostbite 2 engine, according to BioWare's Neil Thompson.

Speaking to OXM, Thompson revealed that the game's artists have been left disappointed in the past over how their visions were realised using BioWare's own Eclipse engine, but were now feeling very positive.

The Dragon Age artists were always slightly disappointed at how their work was visualised in the final product with Eclipse, but with Frostbite, they've just done some amazing stuff.

"Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2 were both done using BioWare's own Eclipse engine, and it was starting to creak a little bit when Dragon Age 2 came out," Thompson admitted. "Inquisition is being done on the Frostbite 2 engine and it is an astonishingly powerful engine."

He continued, "The Dragon Age artists were always slightly disappointed at how their work was visualised in the final product with Eclipse, but with Frostbite, they've just done some amazing stuff.

"There was a pre-production period where almost on a weekly basis I'd be sitting in the environment reviews and being blown away by what was coming out - it looks stunningly beautiful. So I think when we do start releasing screenshots, people won't be disappointed."

He concluded by saying that the team were trying something different to make the game stand out from the "subdued colour palette" of other fantasy games, pondering "Can you make fantasy beautiful in a different way? We think we have something special for Dragon Age III: Inquisition."

Not much is known about the next entry in the Dragon Age franchise, though it's possible we've already been shown one screenshot. It's also all but confirmed that the game will be heading to next-gen consoles and targeting a 2014 release.

Hope it comes to all platforms!! The best part imo is "the team were trying something different to make the game stand out from the "subdued colour palette" of other fantasy games" Hellz yeah! It's time to stop having those generic brown and grey shades!!

BioWare is already talking about Dragon Age II, as there is a bit of discussion of a sequel for the RPG on Joystiq, where BioWare's Dr. Greg Zeschuk talks about spiffing up the game's engine: "I think one of the key things we're working on in Dragon Age 2 is the technology," the BioWare co-founder tells them. "I can confirm that we're doing a lot of work on the Dragon Age engine, and doing a lot of stuff to pump it -- to make it visually super hot."

I found Dragon Age 1 and 2 to be quite ugly, particularly the character models.

I still enjoyed DA:O though and currently playing DA2 which seems decent, so I may look forward to 3.

Yeah, seems as if DA3 will be far more pretty than the prequel going by this article! I love it that they're gonna add more colors ^^

Actually, I thought Dragon Age 2 looked rather decent when it was released. Well on my PC anyway with Tessellation, Copious Anti-Aliasing, Anisotropic Filtering, Depth of Field, SSAO, HD texture pack and stuff all in 5760x1080 Eyefinity at the time.
Certainly makes Origins look horrible and looks better than that low-res 720P screen shot by far.
And ran like a dream on my old Dual Radeon 6950's, so it wasn't that demanding.

With that said, I didn't fall in love with Dragon Age for the sheer graphics, but the story, game play and the characters.
Heres hoping Bioware fixes the crap with Dragon Age 2 and returns to form.
Some mod tools wouldn't go astray either, makes Dragon Age: Origins 100x better and I wouldn't mind a re-focus on the PC instead of dumbing it down for console gamers AND a Steam release please, you can shove that origin where the *beep beep beep beep beep* doesn't shine.
