Forums - Microsoft - [Unofficial Rumour] World Exclusive: Durango unveiled

If this is accurate, looks like it'll be a very good system. One point I see, most games are not able to effectively utilize more than 4 CPU cores, so I assume a portion of the cores will be used for background tasks, kinect, in game skype, and other general compute/os tasks outside of the game. If this is the case, a 1.6GHz core is not the 'beast' CPU that some expected, especially if only a portion of the 8 cores will actually be used by the game. That being said, I think the architecture of the newer systems will lend itself to games starting to offload some code to the powerful GPU, so all 3 systems will be similar in architecture (slower clocked, lower power cores with a higher powered GPGPU), though XB and PS4 will certainly have more CPU cores and somewhat better GPU's (as expected).

Having 8 cores is not necessarily to give the games more CPU grunt (though these cores will be much better and more efficient than the 3.2Ghz cores in the 360), but to provide more threads for background tasks/kinect IMO.

It's also just a rumor, but similar to a lot of the other (reasonable) rumors we've seen.

They're copying each others,of course it's similar

Well,i agree Birimabu, guess i need to ignore all rumors either, not just keep downplaying, also very boring.

This will seal BluRay success in America.

There is 1 problem: The rumored specs of PS4 best the Durango on nearly every front that counts.

4-core AMD APU, paired with an 18 Compute Unit 800mhz HD7870 style GPU (HD7970M derived) means it will smoke the Durango on the CPU and GPU fronts. 8GB of DDR3 system memory means little if PS4's GPU has 50% more processing power and comes with 4GB of GDDR5. More dedicated very fast GPU VRAM is better than more slower system memory.

PS3 was not able to convincingly pull away from Xbox 360 graphically overall (although its exclusive might arguably be better looking for some) because the GPU was weaker than 360's and the RSX was crippled due to 256MB of dedicated GPU memory. If Sony's GPU is 50% more powerful and has access to over 2GB of GDDR5 directly, that would be a huge advantage for Sony's console. Unlike Nintendo's consoles, MS's first party games are too few and extremely narrow in terms of genres (mostly shooters). If PS4 has a more powerful graphics subsystem, continues building on the strength of higher number/higher quality exclusives, doesn't launch 1 year later at $600 like PS3 did, offers BluRay XL support for 100-128GB (with 4K movie upscaling option), has a redesigned Dual Shock controller to make it larger for grown up adult hands, and Sony continues to offer free online gaming, the Xbox 720 will be at a disadvantage on nearly every front for "hardcore" gamers. So far I am not seeing anything about Durango's specs that tells me it will be a good system. I am actually seeing the opposite - it's looking worse and worse compared to what we see rumored for PS4.

Something doesn't add up though -- if PS4/Xbox 720 are expected to cost $350-400, but Sony's console has a faster CPU/GPU, then could MS spent $ on some different features for its console at the sacrifice of overall system performance? If so, what are those cool/unique features? Controllers with screens? Some unique cameras/Kinect 2.0 that illuminates the room?

It will a lot different from that

It's funny just because all these rumors pick that neogaf guess(and change a bit everytime to make it "fresh") so suddenly it become true.

I can't see anything a lot different from that...

as i don't fully understand what this means i've said it before and i'll say it again, no 4k 120fps = no buy, well see later this year.

My god you have completely unrealistic expectations.

THERE WILL BE NO GAMES IN 4K @ 30FPS, LET ALONE 120FPS.

720p60fps will be standard with 1080p30/60fps hitting a good percentage... and that's a very good step up from what was here this gen.

I know you really don't want the next gen consoles to be powerful and I know how hard you hope they'll be in the ballpark of WiiU, but no. If PS4 has 7900M, 1080p@60fps will be pretty much the standard, with some PSN games being 4K.

Due to Sony's financial situation, I seriously doubt 4GB of GDDR5 RAM and won't be surprised if the GPU is weaker than predicted either. Also, it is very, very likely that a 4-core AMD APU in the PS4 would be clocked down somewhat compared to the PC version to save on power consumption & heat (though still arguably better than the rumor in this thread). Most gamers will not give two rips about 4k, and since almost all gaming is and will be done at 1080p for quite some time, and at some distance from the screen, you'd be hard pressed to see massive visual differences in games on the two systems unless you buy a 4k TV and sit 4 feet from it (presuming the PS4 can even do 4k at all).

It will certainly be interesting...

...... am I the only one that feels this tells us nothing meaningful? Specs like this mean nothing, as we learned last gen.

Showing us what this means for gaming experiences is really the only thing that matters. I know we're starving for info, but some of the debates that come out of this stuff just make no sense...

I guess these latest rumors are the final... the hardware not will be a lot different from that.

I expect that extra "magic" make the Nextbox be a lot better than specs... because it is too week looking just for CPU and GPU.

I wouldn't say it's too weak, a little above HD7770 is right were I expected these consoles to be, although they might turn out a little bit weaker than I thought in CPU power, but as that chip isn't even ready that's hard to tell.

If rumors of the PS4's GPU are accurate that's a mighty fine jump for next gen though.

Where do you see a HD7770? If thats what the Nextbos is getting and the 7900M rumor for the PS4 is true, there will be a big difference.

All rumours start to sound the same more or less: PS4 will be a more powerful console, a true game machine. The Nextbox has weaker specs, this means 1 thing: Kinect 2.0 is included with every Nextbox console. It has more ram, for Kinect, media functions and windows os. This doesn't make the 720 bad, it just has a different priority. No doubt it will have beautiful games and I definetly will get the console.

Since both consoles will be much closer to pcs hardware wise, I hope the ps4 is atleast the headplatform for multiplats, or gets pc ports instead of 720 ports.
