Forums - Microsoft - [Unofficial Rumour] World Exclusive: Durango unveiled

Why it has HDMI IN?

Why it has only 1 USB 3.0?

Everything else seems reasonable guess because I was not expecting a 4k compatible gaming machine. Maybe their next one after this will be 4k.

it only says USB 3.0 - that might mean several ports

the HDMI in sure is strange though, maybe they want you to connect your digital TV receiver to the console to enable Kinect control for that or sth.

Because it's a joke that references the big Wii U Ethernet scandal of 2012.

scandal? care to tell me?

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=149644&page=1   A 15 page thread that features exaggerations from both sides.

I guess these latest rumors are the final... the hardware not will be a lot different from that.

I expect that extra "magic" make the Nextbox be a lot better than specs... because it is too week looking just for CPU and GPU.

People keep talking about the next Xbox having some sort of secret hardware.

Does anyone have any clue what it could be? Duel GPU possibly? I just can't really think of what it could be

Kinect 2.0, which might include all kinds of stuff, like that projection rumor.

I suppose but from the rumors it looks more like it has something to do with the internal hardware and power as its always mentioned when discussing the consoles GPU, CPU, and overall power

From Neogaf:

aegies:

I believe these are accurate, though, again, the extra hardware they don't explain will play a major part in what Durango does. I've also heard from reliable sources that the GPU CUs are super-efficient, with an aim for almost 100 percent usage at all times. The 360 hit around 60 percent, I understand. Like I've said previously, context is going to be really important for both systems.

I honestly don't think he needs reliable source to tell him GCN architecture (NextBox/PS4) is way more efficient than VLIW5 (360). ;)

It's funny just because all these rumors pick that neogaf guess(and change a bit everytime to make it "fresh") so suddenly it become true.

I could have drawn that diagram in 10 minutes based on the current favourite rumours. This is not a technical analysis and the term Southbridge is probably bullshit anyway as there is probably no Northbridge to start with if based on AMD x64 technology as the traditional Northbridge isn't needed as the Northbridge is taken onboard the CPU die. All in all this looks like the drawing a PC "enthusiast" would make without the full information available. That's without pointing out that there is no way HDMI output would go through the Northbridge as it would interface through the GPU and likewise the SPDIF output would run through the IO chip (or southbridge if you want to keep the incorrect term).

All in all its a pathetic attempt at getting hits with no insider information imo.

I wouldn't say it's too weak, a little above HD7770 is right were I expected these consoles to be, although they might turn out a little bit weaker than I thought in CPU power, but as that chip isn't even ready that's hard to tell.

If rumors of the PS4's GPU are accurate that's a mighty fine jump for next gen though.

good, bad, garbage, awesome?

Low-end.

CPU side: 8-core 1.6Ghz CPU

1) Based on 4MB L2 cache, this cannot be IBM's latest Power7/7+ architecture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/POWER7). That one has 256kB of L2 cache and 4MB of L3 cache.  If this is similar to PowerPC IBM's architecture found in the Wii U, but has more cores, it's nothing special. You can add more cores, but if they are weak/slow cores, it's still a fundamentally weak CPU because it's very difficult to get games to scale properly across 8 threads. Additionally, more likely than not if MS goes with 8 cores, they plan to dedicate 1-2 of those for something else in the console (perhaps Kinect 2.0, OS, etc.)

2) If this is a Jaguar custom 8-core CPU, it's still slower than a 4-core Trinity APU because Jaguar is positioned below AMD's APUs and performance CPUs (FX series). The thing is Jaguar is just a 1-4 core CPU with 2MB of L2 cache. It seems odd that MS would spend $ to get AMD to design a custom version of this CPU. Either way, the new Jaguar core is targeted at tablets/low end netbooks. The core has been primarily designed for low power consumption, not high-end performance. On paper, 8 cores might sound impressive to those who don't follow CPU architectures but 8 "Jaguar" cores is low end by PC standards.

3) If this is FX8000 clocked at 1.6Ghz, that's self-explanatory (Slow).

Any of these options mean the CPU is low-end.

GPU side:

768 Steam processers @ 800mhz => very similar to a 1Ghz 640 Steam processor HD7770. That's a low-end GPU. (HD7750-7770 = Low end, HD7850-7870 = mid-range, HD7950-7970 = High-end).

----

The idea of a next gen console with high-end components today is just a pipe dream. The PC landscape has changed completely from the days when Xbox 360/PS3 launched. Top end GPUs consume well over 200W of power and cost $500-1000. For example, NV is getting ready to launch GTX780 series with 235W of TDP at $899. Even if MS/Sony could purchase these high-end GPUs at cost, it'll still tip the scale at over $400 for the GPU parts and then the power consumption for the GPU alone would be much as the entire PS3....

I think consoles will have to differentiate themselves based on features (free online gaming), multi-media, key exclusive games, unique controls/gaming experience, etc. Differentiating on graphics is probably unlikely given the rumored parts. Just to get to Samaritan level of graphics, Epic estimated that you'd need a GPU with 2.5Tflops. Almost all of the current rumors keep pointing to Xbox 720/PS4's GPUs falling way short of that mark.

Very tired of these rumors. From now on, I'll ignore all these rumor threads, I will only see a topic that brings the official specs/announcement.
