Part of me thinks that since the PS3 is picking up in sales the past few years, the PS fans got some of their confidence back from the glory PS2 days.

But then here's the Vita, the one piece of hardware that's holding back the PS fans from true greatness. This isn't about games, this is about bragging rights. As long as Vita struggles, they can't say with 100% confidence that Sony is a God again.

PSP never did well even when the real God of gaming (PS2) was the market leader.  Home and portable are entirely different monsters.  Look at Nintendo.  They lost home console market with N64 and Gamecube but their handhelds remained dominant in those years.

Yet here we are. PSP did great for a first timer. Totally different then the numbers Vita is pulling in.

yeah here we are because you brought it up.  I keep the handheld and home console market completely separate.  Why you would think that Vita not doing well would tarnish PS3 sales in the slightest is beyond me.

Vita resources impact console resources, like you said. Sounds more intertwined then you like to admit.

I was talking about how sony's first party studios could get stretched thin that's completely different than the sales of one impacting your brand name or being indicative of how strong the other is.  Like I said Nintendo was dominant in handhelds even when they sucked in home console sales.  Sony sucked in handhelds when they were dominating home consoles.  The two are unrelated sales wise but resource wise yes they are related obviously because MM and GG are making Vita games (although they are also working on other projects apparently).

part of the growth...
maybe the table will turn around in a couple of years. It is a good hardware to start, sony will utilize its power soon. when? ps4 era maybe?

Another thing is there's room on it for L2 and R2 buttons (theres a notch below the R and L that could fit them) so I don't get why that wasn't included. Would've REALLY made it a portable PS3 (should've had slightly bigger, better analog sticks that click to complete this idea). I think they could manage that without sacrificing any more portability (I already only would carry it in a backpack at its current size and would get a case anyway).

But to tell you the truth you guys have reassured me. I hope it doesn't distract them from PS4 and we'll see what 3rd parties do with the system. If they can pick up some sales once it hits $200 then maybe there'll be hope for it yet.

The VITA would have been better if it also had android support / an android OS alternative.

People love the idea of the potential of a device. There are millions of apps on the app store, but how many do people actually use? 5-10?

With the PS VITA, SONY banked on their PSP library to convince people to pay the price of the VITA. The decision to sell the device without any inherent memory created some confusion and increased the cost. If they had 4gb in every device, people would see how great it is to download psp games, and then upgrade later.

That being said I think the PS VITA is a great device. I bought it, but sold it because I never played it.

Why should they stop supporting the Vita ? it's the best handheld ever made so far.. I loved the psp and still..
It is true that the vita is selling poorly (less than the DS this week..), but it just needs few selling games and a price cut and BOOM, the 3DS event all over again !!

Vita is great tech, but it's caught in a catch-22. It can't sell because there's few/no must have games on it (and it's expensive) and until it sells theres no incentive for anyone to develop games for it.

3rd parties have more platforms to develop for than ever before now that iOS/Android are major game drivers. Most of their (portable gaming) resources are going to go there. Then 3DS. Vita costs the most to develop for and has by far, the smallest user base.

I think Sony is doing a lot of great things to support Vita but they misread the market. It should have been cheaper or a gaming tablet. Lots of android gaming tablets are going to be coming out and this will distract any potential audience from Vita even more with far more features/cheap-free games. Sure Vita COULD have vastly superior games - if anyone ever decides it worthwhile to make them.

Unless Sony can pull a Pokemon or Monster Hunter type hit out of their arse I don't see much hope for Vita. Even 3DS isn't selling that hot in NA/Europe and they have both Pokemon & MH.

So should Sony continue to prop up an underperforming system or divert all resources to ensuring PS4 is a success? If I was Sony, I would divert most resources to PS4 and quietly let Vita pass on, forgotten and kill it about a year after PS4 launches, when hopefully, everyone is in love with PS4 and has forgotten Vita exists.

The Vita has many fun games to play.

Without the Vita, we would not have those games.

So, I am glad we have the Vita. :D

Wishing we didn't have those games??? Well, that would be selfish and shortsighted.

Otherwise, I suppose you may be prejudice against people enjoying their handheld console gaming.

The Vita is the best portable I have in my home, what u talkin bout.

Pretty much. I absolutely LOVE my Vita!

I don't care about profits / sales, it has the potential to be my favourite handheld ever.

It doesn't matter one damn bit if the vita is 100x better than the competition.
What matters is the sales and cash money it can generate into Sony's wallet.

It is absolutely bad business to produce the best of anything ever built and still go bust because of it.

Based of the PSP sales I never expected vita to set the world alight... more so the western part of it.
If there is another handheld made by Sony I strongly believe it would only be for the Asian market.

As for the question ... well it's one of those pointless ones.

Every fool is a genius when it comes to hindsight and the answer is of no real value.
