Has Microsoft stolen IllumiRoom?

Microsoft stole a lot of headlines this week with their IllumiRoom reveal where they projected a 360 degree image across the room to enhance the immersive nature of gaming and other entertainment forms… but did they steal this idea from someone else?

An Englishman by the name of Graham Thomas demonstrated this exact ability to the BBC back in February 2010 and the BBC wrote an article, inclusive with video, about it right here. According to a reddit user, chrisbaume, Graham has patented this technology and backs up that claim with a link to the exact patent which can be viewed here which oddly enough seems to have been filed by the BBC

I’m guessing that the fact that this article has made it onto reddit that Microsoft hasn’t purchased the patent from Graham or the BBC either.

So do you think Microsoft are in a bit of trouble here or is the technology sufficiently different to avoid litigation?

Eh, companies patent similar things all the time. Thats why there are so many patent disputes. If the guy complains, it will go to court and microsoft will just settle like they always do. Typical business.

This guy could have beaten Microsoft t the patent, but that doesn't mean Microsoft stole it from him. Microsoft could have been working o this for years and they most likely were.

maybe there is a loophole if the british guy only patented it for use with movies and such(which actually doesn't make sense to me, as the field of view from what I know is limited by the camera you use to shoot the film), while MS seems more interested in using it for games (which makes more sense as stuff that is not on your screen usually still is calculated and could be visualized that way)

Huh? Reddit is now a clearinghouse for absolutely 100%, iron clad, truthful info you can take to the bank? Really? Wow.

No. It's more likely they bought the company thay made it. That's how MS always does business. How they got Kinect,Skype,Windows Security Essentials as a few examples.
