Forums - Sales Discussion - PS3 Enjoys Record Holiday Sales in Europe; Sony Could Miss Annual Target

What? ssj, stop confusing people, we're talking about fiscal year sales not lifetime sales. Sony was supposed to sell 11 million ps3 in this fiscal year and they will fail. The analyst is expecting 8 million instead of 11 million units. There, that's the jist of it.

Fearing

Doubting.

It says in the original thread that sony would fall short of their goal by 27%. 9.4 into 11 is 85% with 2 months and a few days to go. So if it was lifetime sales it may of missed it by 10% not the 27% so it must be for the fiscal year.

fact : fical year projected sales 11million
considering they already had 2 million sales or so before this fical year
it is quite possible they won't make their projected sales

No.  Sony meant to sell 11 million in 12 months.  Which they are going to fall short of.  They were supposed to sell 14.5 million LTD by March.

Quite possible? Nearly impossible in my books. Even if they were at 8 million now for the year they would have to sell 3 million in 2 months and a few days. get my calculator out...

Thats 333000 a week in the quietest sales period of the year. not possible.

Wait what? How does selling 2 million before this year make it more likely they will reach those sales.

That just means they'd have to sell 2 million more. (Aka 13 million to reach their goal of 11 million.  Though in reality i believe they need to hit 14.5 mil.)

.

In the annual report for the last fiscal year, they report sales of 5.5 million ps3 units (so probably that much units built in the fab up to 31/03/2007), if they want to get 11 million additional units out of the factory up to end of march 2008, there would be 16.5 million units in the market ... Unlikely they are about to get 16.5 million units out to the customer anytime near or close after that date (31/03/2008) and rather unlikely retailers like to stock PS3s in huge quantities ....

Worldwide hardware production shipments (decrease compared to the previous fiscal year):*
PS3 . . . 5.50 million units

* Production shipments of hardware and software are counted upon shipment of
the products from manufacturing bases. Sales of such products are recognized
when the products are delivered to customers.

Produce, not likely.  Sell to retailers, possibly.  Sell to consumers, been done.

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 07th Oct 2007 to 30th Dec 2007:

ConsoleDS
Total
12,659,598

On topic, other have already straightened it out.   Nothing new or suprising to most ofus, just waiting for the fiscal report to see what Sony says about it.

Whoa, whoa.  They switched they're reporting methods after the 5.5 million units shipped as in PRODUCED.  They had sold to retail about 3.5 million units that time, and they are now reporting shipped as in sold to retail.  The fiscal goal of 11 million units means ~14.5 million units LTD at the end of March.
