Forums - Sony - Sony Won't Release PS4 until 2014 and It Won't Be a Gimped Console.

I expect PS4 to launch at $400-450. $500 is possible but I believe it would be unwise, and IMO Sony has been humbled enough by the catastrophe of the PS3's launch ("fans will get 2 jobs to buy it") that they will shy away from repeating history, since they cannot afford a mistake of that magnitude again.

Sony needs to release when Microsoft does.
Sony needs to release it at a reasonable price.
Sony needs to not lose money on each unit sold (This may be slightly negotiable).

Platinums: Red Dead Redemption, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Terminator Salvation, Uncharted 1, inFamous Second Son, Rocket League

In my opinion, holiday 2013 is an AWESOME year for the PlayStation 4 to launch.

1. With the Xbox 720 (or whatever it's called) manufacturing delays, the PS4 could be first on the market, so developers would make their new games based on the PS4's hardware, so the X720 will get a taste of what the PS3 had to deal with (inferior ports, late DLC, criticisim, etc.).

Anyway, here are my predictions for the PS4:

Emulator for PS3 games, but you don't have to buy the license for the game again. You'll receive a game code via the PSN that lets you access your PS3 games on the PS4 to download from the PS4 PlayStation Store.

New Killzone, MotorStorm, and Infamous games available as PS4 launch games.

SOE (Sony's PC game devs) ports all of its free to play games to the PS4 and its pay to play selection.

PS4 lauches for $399 for the 750 GB model and $449 for the 1250 GB model.

First-party games for the PS4 uses Sony's new custom Blu-ray discs that can hold 100 GB of game data.

A new GUI (user interface) for the PS4 allows voice chat via the PS Move, and allows users to purchase and view content in-game.

Sony secures exclusive content from Ubisoft, EA Sports, and Rockstar.

A new PS controller is made, which is similar to the Xbox 360 controller, but has a back touchpad, microphone, and has a speaker built-in.

Allows users to stream games via Games Unlimited (Gaikai name is dropped and turned into Games Unlimited) for a low price of $29.99 a month

Totally new PS Store interface and allows PC users to download PS4 games from any computer and transport it through a BD-RW disc.

4K support for video and games and can upscale content from 1080p.

PS4 runs at 852.3GHz (My guess if PS4 is 3x more powerful than the PS3).

Sony allows Linux and OpenGL.

Cross game video chat.

PS4 sells 88M by 2020

If Sony doesnt release the Ps4 this year and Microsoft releases the 720, its game over for them. They have no choice here. Its either release this year or face bankrupcy.

NOPE.

I hope you were being sarcastic because if you really belive that you should probably seriously re-read that and see how ridiculous it sounds.

It doesnt sound ridiculous at all. Sony is in a difficult situation, and the PS3 did not have an easy first 5 years. With the Wii U dominating Japan and with Microsoft dominating the US, both unopposed for one year will leave Sony in a difficult situation in the market.

I dont know if you've been hiding under a rock, but Sony's credit rating has been cut to trash. This means that just to pay their debts Sony is gonna incur on an interest rate that should be about the 10% by now. That is a really difficult situation and why the Vita has not received a price cut. Sony needs money fast, they cannot afford any more mishaps or delays. If the PS4 fails to be competitive quickly, Sony will lose even more investor support since the Playstation is their most valuable brand at the moment. If that brand falters, theres nothing else preventing Sony from sinking like the Titanic.

If its any confort, i do wish that doesnt happen as i'd like to get a PS4 next gen. Believe me, Sony doesnt want to wait until next year.

Pretty much what you said. Sony is in dire need of releasing the PS4, even more so in Japan in my opinion as Japanese 3rd party developers will most likely flock to Nintendo due to the positive growth of 3DS and Wii U.

I disagree

The Last of Us is releasing in mai 2013 instead of christmas and PS2 Production stopped worldwide. Wii U is already out and Microsoft will not give sony a headstart too and will also try to release in 2013.

PS4 will definitely release in 2013.

Nothing for the holidays doesn't mean that there is a relese this year, but it does likely mean there is at least an announcement.  One can also end up maybe seeing some last hurrah stuff announced at E3 as things go into 2014.

The PS3 is not the best selling console in the world. That title goes to the 3DS. Yes, it is currently the best selling home console, but that's not going to last for too long. As the Wii U gets more games, this generation winds away, and as the PS3 dies more and more, eventually the Wii U will begin to outsell the PS3. I'm not sure when this will happen, but I'm sure the Wii U will outsell the PS3 during the holidays, which is the most important time of the year.

Passing the 360 yeilds no advantages for Sony or consumers. When the PS3 passes the 360, it's only going to be by a tiny amount, so it's not going to change the grand situation. Developers & consumers aren't going to abandon the 360 and switch to the PS3. Nor is Sony suddenly going to start making more money. However, the disadvantages  of such a move are quite serious. You give both the Wii U and Nextbox an even bigger headstart than what they would have otherwise. You also leave the PS3 as the primary Playstation console even though it's going to be practically dead during 2014. This simply isn't worth it when they are no advantages at all.

The PS3 is in a steep decline. In 2012, the console sold only 11.8m units, which is down 16% even with the new Slim. This year, it'll drop even harder meaning it'll sell ~9.5m or less, especially as this generation dies. 9.5m isn't too bad if the PS4 is also releasing this year, but if not, then those are some worrying sales. That means the PS3 will be the primary Playstation console during most of 2014, when it'll sell even less - somewhere around 5-7m I think. These sales simply aren't sustainable for the primary Playstation console. It makes more sense to get the PS4 out when the PS3 still has some life in it (this year) rather than when it'll be dead (next year).

Sony should not focus on power next gen. When they did focus on power with the PS3, it only gave them a minuscule advantage over the 360, and resulted in an extremely expensive console. You seem to have forgotten about how poorly the PS3 did during the first half of the generation. Either that  or you're posting from a fans perspective rather than a business perspective, which it seems you are. Sony needs to go back to their PS1/PS2 strategy and ditch the focus on power altogether imo.

Yes, Sony said they've never been first or the cheapest, but so what? First of all, they didn't even make a claim, they just noted a trend with their hardware. Second of all, even if they made a claim, that means nothing. Remember when they called the Wii a fad? Yeah....Third of all, they can still release a PS4 this year at >$300 and they wouldn't be first or the cheapest. This quote doesn't support your argument at all.

wait... so are you saying PS4 will come in 2013?

Lol at everyone thinking Sony is going 2 go bankrupt, its not going 2 happen.

Yes, several factors have changed my stance on this, but it's mainly been the low recent sales of the PS3; it doesn't seem smart for Sony to release the PS4 any later than this year imo.

So are you going to call our bet and update your sig or wait for it to be official?
