Forums - Sony - Sony CES tonight at 8 EST, what to expect?

http://venturebeat.com/2013/01/07/sony-joins-the-4k-tv-bandwagon/

Sony said today it will launch several new 4K Ultra HD televisions today. It will also start filling out the ecosystem to support the switch to a new line for brighter and crisper displays.

Phil Molyneux, head of Sony Electronics, announced at Sony’s press event that Sony will launch new 55-inch and 65-inch 4K TVs in addition to the 84-inch TV it has already launched. The move announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, is similar to announcements by a number of other TV makers at the show today.

“It’s really like looking through a window,” Molyneux said.

He said Sony would launch the first 4K video distribution service to provide more content for 4K TVs. Movies such as the Amazing Spider-Man are available in 4K Ultra HD, but a lot more content has to materialize before consumers will join the bandwagon. Sony has 4K digital cinema projectors in 14,000 theaters, and it has now launched a 4K video camera for consumers. Sony Pictures is planning on releasing a number of Blu-ray 4K movie discs in the spring.

“4K is not the future,” said Kaz Hirai, chief executive of Sony. “It’s now.”

Sony also announced a 4K 56-inch OLED display. But, unfortunately for Hirai, the TV gave a blue screen when it was unveiled.

“Excellent,” Hirai said, when the TV failed. Everybody laughed, except the Sony employees, who wheeled the TV off the stage.

Those 4K blu-ray movies sound interesting. Will they use higher capacity blu-ray discs, make you swap discs half way through the movie, or compress it down to current blu-ray quality.

My next TV will defiantly be that blue screened wonder and I'm sure a PS4K will be powering it.

ria Z against the Xperia ZL, the oblong, broad Xperia Z felt almost too big in our hands; the ZL felt much more at home. Sony's barely unveiled them on stage at its press event, but we got the chance to play with both devices earlier today, (just about) wrapping our fingers around both the Xperia Z and the slightly smaller Xperia ZL. So what did we think? Hop on after the break for our hands-on video and full impressions.

While Sony had a phone in each hand to greet us in Vegas, the Xperia Z is where it's

So, does the 4K revolution replace the wearing glasses driven 3D revolution?

Why do people want 4k? The human eye can barely tell if at all the difference between 4k and current unless its like a 100' tv

Guys check these out. Sony have made 10 videos for different aspects of Xperia Z. This is a thing of beauty and the videos are extremely well done and short.

They asked about the Ps4 after the confrence Kaz said "We will reveal it when we can in a big way" - aka E3 lol

I have fingers crossed for a Playstation Meeting event. Announce the event and have it after a few weeks with a full stage presentation. Then bring the games to E3

:( I just want to know moreeee lol

Is this not the case all the time though?

And overall it was alright. I was expecting no news on Playstation, so I came out impressed. Just a shame the presentation sorta broke down with technical issues part-way though.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

It just depends how far you sit. You can easily see the difference with a 32" pc monitor on your desk.

I'm more interested in 4K projectors coming down in price. I sit about 11 ft away from a 92" screen. I can easily see pixels at that distance and size at 1080p.

I did some research some time ago and at around 100 pixels per degree you lose sight of individual pixels with a maximum of 200 pixels per degree beyond which you can't notice any difference anymore.
At 8 ft you need a minimum of 37" diagonal to notice any difference between 1080p and 4K and can go up to 74" before you can use 8K.
9 ft    -> 42" to 83"
10 ft  -> 46" to 92"
11 ft  -> 51" to 102"
