And did anybody really think Wii U would sell like the Wii? Really?

I think a lot of people did. Why do you think so many people put up a Wii U on Ebay, they thought it would have been sold out just like the Wii was when it first released.

I also think Nintendo thought so as well.

I'm not too sure actually... Those who bought one and intended to sell it on eBay probably wasn't gamers and don't know anything about games in general. I don't think anyone around HERE thought it would sell like Wii...

Just as expected.  That brings 2012 to a close and let's get that Nintendo Direct rolling!!!

I WAS JUST ABOUT TO CREATE THAT THREAD! O.O

I like the last paragraph ''Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said the weaker yen would have little impact on the firm's profits this fiscal year, but would positively impact its foreign denominated assets.''

What do you think overall?

I inferred from that there was "little" profit so the currency fluctuation would be immaterial.  The variable cost of rhe products are mostly hitched to local currency (given how RMB is hitched on production cost side and marketing is always local currency).  The foreign denominated assets is a broader category than Cash, so the movement might be an even greater impact than we thought (or I hoped)?

There is nothing Iwata can do to trumpet Nintendo's situation.  Only a full 2013 release schedule would cheer fans and investors alike.

So what does that mean for us investors lol? :P

Profit goal seems locked for end of fiscal year judging by Iwata's comment - good.

The weaker yen will help them for year-end profits but not by much, I get that but it's this sentence that puts a question mark: would positively impact its foreign denominated assets.

What does it mean lol? Is it more inclined towards the weak yen will in turn help our foreign assets offset the losses?

I honestly think wii u is selling like crap, the system has plenty of stock and just launched with its best selling game of all time sequel, and at a great price for a new system.

One positive out of this.  Yes, it's a great price for a new system.  Thanks for help spreading the word.  :p

So nintendo turning it around and going back on track for profitability means they aren't doomed right? Can't say I'm surprised by it.

One more thing to complete my year = senran kagura localization =D

Nintendo Co Ltd's year-end sales of its Wii U games console were steady, though not as strong as when its Wii predecessor was first launched, the Japanese game maker's top executive told Reuters on Monday.

The company best known for its Super Mario character is pinning its hopes on the Wii U after logging its first operating loss last year, as gamers ditch console games to play on smartphones and tablets.

Nintendo said in October it aimed to sell 5.5 million Wii U devices by the end of March. Wii U, the successor to the blockbuster Wii machine, went on sale in the United States on Nov. 18. The company said later that month that it sold more than 400,000 of the video game consoles in the first week.

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said the weaker yen would have little impact on the firm's profits this fiscal year, but would positively impact its foreign denominated assets.

Why do they (the media) ALWAYS bring up smartphones and tablets? All they'll do is maintaining the console market on a 7th gen instal base; no growth - but it's not like they'll destroy gaming!!

The same way they refuse to accept Tablets as an evolutionary step in "computing".  But at least there you have the wintel twins losing market share.  Nintendo's 3DS and Wii U sales track so closely to their predecessors, calling an entirely new genre of gaming Nintendo's loss is beyond me.  I see those as expansions of video gaming industry with vast potential upside as feeder market and now much easily reached audience for future marketing.

I guess that's what they call "ignorance" ;) It always baffles me that people on this very forum seems to be more knowledgeable than most journalists...

Were you asking if the members on this site really thought it would sell like the wii or the general public? If you were talking about the members on this site, then I can't answer that. As for the general public, I think they did and the preorders made it seem that way as well.

I don't think the general public even knows what the Wii U is or that it's out! xD Nintendo's done a poor ass job marketing this console...

Man, you most have hated the launch of xbox360 and PS3!! Prepare to be disappointed when PS720 releases ;)

I'm sure both launches will sell out of stock immediately, xbox brand was not big when 360 launched and ps3 was way over priced  and the graphics were not looking better then 360 at the time.

Just takes time.  Now everyone takes for granted that you can just google something up and the algorithms never needed to be understood by the public.  Same thing with Twitter, the right handle will give you laser like precision to any given audience.  Mobile phones Im sure will infinitely approach the number of population on this planet.  And the apps market will for the first time delineate and highlight potential gamers like never before.  Instead of spending gazillions on a Superbowl ad and hope someone catches your message.  Games I'm sure will be delivered right to the person.   Just like now, I go online looking to buy something, and somehow no matter which website I go, the same damn Hudson Valley Foie Gras ad follows me around.

The apps market will finally remove the "shame" of gaming and nudge it right along side everyday entertainment venues.  And in gamer world, all of us would be like prophets.  We were playing games before games were cool!!
