Hey, you said it, not me. XP

Anyway, haven't we had this whole "flop" discussion enough times now?

No

I think we have. We had a whole thread discussing the definition of "flop." If you think people are still being dumb, take it out on the dumb people. You're only encouraging the silliness by going after the Wii U.

I'm not going after the Wii U as I haven't called the Wii U a flop. I'm merely asking if those people still have the same definition of flop, or if they've changed their methodology as it fits their agenda. The only people that could be going after the Wii U are people who think expectations determine a game flopping.

Yes, we've had a thread discussing the definition of "flop" but it was not convincing. This thread is much more convincing - the best way to expose broken logic is to use that logic against the user. I believe this is the most effective way to convince someone that they're wrong.

We won't know until the end of the fiscal year if it is below expectation which is 5.5m stated by nintendo.

Somebody gets it!  This thread should be about how clueless people are at predicting hardware sales.  No offense but anyone expecting a number higher than 3.5M is simply delusional.  If I make a complete nonsensical prediction like the Wii U will sell 2M in Jan 2013 should we should call it a flop or major flop if it sells 800k?

If Wii U doesn't SHIP 4.5M by April fools day, start the flop thread.  At the same time the launch only would be a flop not the system that early...cough..3DS...cough...PS3.

That would be a good thread to do.  Want to start one and then point this thread to it?  There is REALLY BAD predictions going on.  I had done one asking why people expected millions of sales out of Playstation All-Stars, for example.  So, having a thread on the predictions all around, is worth looking into.

LOL, it looks like I made very optimistic predictions for almost every console and portabe. So, according to this criterion, I should consider almost everything a flop or a major flop.

honestly i don't see any console doing well at launch for a long time look at the vita and 3DS after launch but granted the 3DS is doing well and the vita is slowly getting going

lets create a thread to redefine what flop means to make the WiiU look like it's not a "flop" just like we did in the Vita thread

Beginning of 2012 I think. Still, I think pretty much everyone expected a Nov/Dec release at that point (based on past trends and the little info from Nintendo) so us not knowing the release date wouldn't be a factor.

Edit: What a nice sig you have, Jay.

It was also predicted by some that the WiiU would hurt PS360 sales and beat them both during the holiday season.

I think we need to talk about this.

Yes, I remember DaRev even making a bet with me about that. Unfortunately he spelled 2013 as '2012' when the bet was made >_>. I was led astray by the hype, and genuinely thought WiiU would beat PS3 during the holiday season.

Haha i didn't say all PS3s I just said the super slim ones will be outsold by Wii U, because they were both released end of 2012. But of course I don't think we had any way of separating different types of PS3 (bigs, slims, or super slims) sales.  And by the way, I did mean 2012 - you just read what you wanted to read, not what was actaully there. I still maintian Wii U outsold PS3 supper slim, between launch to end 2012

It's outsold both the PS3 and 360 during their launches and sold around 80% of the Wii sales during its launch. Not a flop by any stretch of the imagination.

PS3 was 600 dollars at launch, Xbox 360 (400$) and Wii were both supply constrainted at launch. The Wii U is 350 dollars and abundent in supply.

Edit: PS3 also didn't release in Europe till March 2007 (4 months after the NA launch).

And none of those consoles were released in the middle of the worst worldwide recession seen in donkey's years. The Wii U is selling fine.

Nintendo is making money just after one game sold per wiiU, so to call it a flop is a complete nonsense. I don't remember if I predited any number, but if we go by what Aielyn stated, then my friend we have a very successful console in front of us...

Fair enough, but if you don't mind my saying so, I think a lot of the 'intended audience' is missing the point and just sees this as another Wii U doom thread. What we're getting here is a lot of people defending the Wii U and saying it's not a flop, not people apologizing for calling other things flops in the past and suggesting they've been wrong about the word.

I don't know why price and supply-constraints are important. The console sells what it sells. Surely, price influences the demand, but the same does advertisement and games. Should we say, that PS2-launch-numbers aren't comparable, because the system had good games, was cheap and had good advertisement? Nobody forced Sony to price the PS3 at 600 €/$, they could have reduced the specs and release to a lower price-point.

The later release on the other hand is a point, but considering that:

WiiU, Japan, first 4 weeks: 644,474

WiiU, Europe, first 4 weeks: 415,426

WiiU, USA, first 4 weeks: 849,068

Sum:  1,908,968

PS3, Japan, first 4 weeks: 197,567

PS3, Europe, first 4 weeks: 743,910

PS3, USA, first 4 weeks:  378,603

Sum:  1,320,080

So, the WiiU launched better than PS3 even if you take into account the later launch.

And stop the crap, that this comparison is not working because of the price, otherwise I start to praise 3DO-launch.

Who praised the sales numbers of the PS3 launch? I said the price was one of the major reasons it didn't sell well early in the generation and started very slow. The Wii U standard is launching at almost half the price the PS3 did, I think that effects sales numbers quite a bit. Pretty sure the 3DO was not a success. And of course supply constraints matter, if the console is always in short supply from the manufacturers then it's harder to buy.
