Forums - General - Iceland teen known legally as 'girl' fights for right to name

Idiots are the ones doing the naming, if they chose a name like "Light Breeze".

But it's the parents' fault. They shouldn't have been defiant and should have given her a proper, legal name in the first place. In legal terms, "Light Breeze" is nothing more than a nickname.

This makes no sense.  Are you saying "Zephyr" is not really a name, even though it is the name of a Greek god?  Because it pretty much means "light breeze".  You seem to be making a culturally biased assumption that you can translate this girl's name to English and then apply your sense of aesthetics to the translated version.  90% of all names have some mundane everyday meaning when you translate them.

Pezus, if i wished to become an Icelandic citizen would I have to change my name due to its Gaelic origins? If I wed an Icelandic woman and had a son would I be able to name him after me?

First question: I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have to.

Second question: I honestly don't know. Do you mean if you were already an Icelandic citizen? I don't know how they handle that.

Let us say either.

1. I was not a citizen, she was a citizen and also my son.

2. I was a citizen, as would be my wife and son.

I think a large part of this question deals with national identity and immigration can have big effect on that.  Does Iceland have many immigrants?

In the US people seem to not care as much, it's not uncommon to see a male with a female name and Vice versa. I see the issue though, kind of sucks in her case because she grew up with that name and loves it and is now forced to change it? Seems a little unfair, really doubt it's going to work in her favor knowing Iceland.

Yes it's a stupid name but it's really up to the people who name there kid that, surely?

Nope. Humans are morons. One would have thought the 20th century proved it pretty clearly. They need to be protected from themselves.

Government has far more to worry about than some idiots names. A persons name should not be of any concern to the government at all, with big and important issues like war and the economy about

No war to worry about here. I don't see how war is more justified than rules for names, lol.

I was being very general, when i said government has to worry about war, i weren't saying yours was actually apart of any war. But let these people learn the hard way about there stupid names

I do get the girl's point though. She thought that really was her name. I wouldn't like it if someone suddenly told me my name is not *CENSORED*.

I just think its up to them, it's of no concern to others really

As Barozi pointed out earlier, a child's well-being is of everyone's concern.

Well answer this then. Why can some people (often celebrities) get away with giving there kid a stupid name, while an ordinary person (in Iceland) can't give there kid a stupid name? whats the difference? it's just apart of freedom of speech, that's all

Like Crissindahouse said earlier: Do you think anyone is going to bully a rich kid, especially one that has celebs for parents? They aren't allowed to do that though in Iceland, not Germany either.

At least Germany and Iceland have that common sense. But i guess all a name shows is what a parent really thinks of you and no a kid of some famous people would be respected rather than bullied, but what i don't understand is why it should be that way.
